How does our backroom staff compare to that of the rest of the Premier League? If anything to me we seem to be a bit light on the coaching front. By my counts for the first team we seem to have Stone, Woodman and Carver doing the majority of the work. Apart from being Ashley's public arse licker, is Beardsley now more involved with the youngsters or does he do first team work? It just seems to me a lot of clubs these days tend to have a lot of coaches that all specialise in different areas. Whereas we have such a small bunch do we actually do this? We know this season we've struggled in matches to adapt to different situations. As I mentioned on here earlier on, we go and attack at Old Trafford and The Emirates and our defending is embarrassing. We go to Norwich yesterday and aim for defensive solidarity yet our attacking play suffers because of this. There must be some coaches out there that we could hire to help improve things? Clive Allen apparently done a good job of the attacking coaching at Spurs and is out of work etc. Or is this another case of Ashley's penny pinching that he won't let Pardew add to his staff? Maybe he had his fingers burnt by having to pay off all of Allardyce's henchmen back in the day? As of course he wouldn't let Hughton replace Calderwood and him and Keegan did not seem to have a large number of backroom staff too. I'm not privy to club information so don't really know how does what on the training pitch so I will more than likely be wrong. Then on the scouting front we have Carr and Norman Wooster. Doesnt leave a great deal of time for doing stuff. I would guess theres some routine where its gym, weights etc so how much time do they actually spend playing football / practising a day? Not much I would have thought. Its also not as though these chaps are learning something new every week (Thats not trying to be a clever cunt btw), but a cross is a cross and a shot is a shot. Tom 14002 Posted January 13, 2013 Share Posted January 13, 2013 I think there's a broad range of staff at the training ground/academy - no doubt there's other lads doing the sports science & strength & conditioning coaching but on the front there doesn't look to be a lot but I imagine a lot of them aren't documented in any official capacity. I know a lad who works at the academy with the youth teams & occasionally reserves/first team & he's not listed anywhere so I imight ask him the crack next time I see him. Obviously some countries have been more detailed than others. You'd be amazed at the level of detail people have looked at football in for the last 50 or so years. You'd be amazed at the level of detail people have looked at football in for the last 50 or so years. I'm talking day in day out with the first team squad. Go and get your haircut there, he'll talk Newcastle all day long. Been to a few away games with him, and often have a drink with him before home games. Never got a single piece of ITK from him whatsoever. And they are close. Went to each others weddings, he gets complimentary tickets all the time. Either Steve Stone is the consummate professional or no-one sat on the bench has a clue what goes on. I think it's the latter and they have no say on what roles they can create for new hires. I want to see us control a game, not chase it. I think we definitely need someone to sort our set pieces; not just attacking corners and freekicks, but setting ourselves up to counter after defending them. I also would like to see a dedicated attacking coach brought in; when you've players with the vision and technique of Ben Arfa and Cabaye you need the players about them to be aware of the spaces that can be opened up by the two I mention. Happy Face 29 Posted March 31, 2013 Share Posted March 31, 2013 I've watched games where I want I'd to pressure the opposition to win back possession as quickly and effectively as possible and I've been disappointed we haven't done that. But against man city, at their place, I think it's more important to keep your shape and just let them have the ball up to a certain point. They'll run you ragged otherwise. They never had a shot on target for the first third of the game. We came closest via Cisse onto the post in that time. It wasnt good to watch, but for a patch work team it was effective. All fair points, but how many clubs actually have "dedicated" coaches for specific areas?....does Steve Bould only do the defence at Arsenal?...doesn't reflect that well on him if he does tbh. What in effect you're saying here is Pardew isn't good enough in certain aspects of his work, and that's fair comment too. But then we'll go out and get good results at the likes of Anzhi and Metalist largely because of his tactics. He is overall ok, about as good as we'll get for the money.
