Happy Face 29
Just done a search and there's only been one mention of Odd Future across Toontastic. I've only got their most popular stuff so I am writing this for myself as a reference as much as anyone else, to remind myself what I'm missing..... Odd Future Hip hop collective from LA. Outside of Mix Tapes and compilations, their only collective studio album is The OF Tape Vol. 2 from 2012. Reviews of it said like "early Wu-Tang, a thrilling regional act, and a bunch of whip-smart black hipsters whose worldview is grounded in their corner of sun-baked southern California." and "sounds like a bunch of punk kids having the time of their lives." Their Mixtapes are The Odd Future Tape & Radical. 12 Odd Future Songs is a compilation that's available. Tyler, The Creator leads OF and is only 21 but has already released 2 solo albums (Bastard - "the album fucking slams" & Goblin - "a masterpiece for those capable of stomaching it.") with another (Wolf) in his pocket. Frank Ocean The most widely praised other member. Channel Orange is his only studio album and it was hugely praised across the board in 2012. Nostalgia, Ultra was just as well praised a year earlier, but was a free download mixtape, rather than an official album. Hodgy Beats Released an untitled ep last year which Sterogum said was "probably the best set of tracks the Odd Future camp has squeezed out since, like, Goblin." He also has a mixtape called The Dena Tape. Left Brain With Hodgy Beats performs separate to OF as a duo called MellowHype. 3 albums are out - YelloWhite, BlackenedWhite & Numbers. "With a sound that's more subtly sinister than their other OF comrades, the album finds the pair upping the ante with a collection of songs that feels more visceral than their earlier work, while still maintaining enough of a haze that that it feels distinctly like MellowHype. This helps to create an almost intoxicating mix of aggression and dissonance. The way the songs work to rile up, confuse, and generally poke at the listener from all angles makes the group feel like the hip-hop equivalent of black metal" Earl Sweatshirt Debut album Earl was out in 2010 when he was 16. His mam heard it and sent him to boarding school in Samoa to keep him away from whoever was influencing him towards such disturbing thoughts. He's back now, with new album Doris due in 2013. Apparently he has been working with the legendary MF DOOM on stuff, not sure if it's for this album or the next. Domo Genesis 2010 album "Rolling Papers is really amazing, whether high or sober. Overall, Domo creates one of the best, if most slept on, release in the Odd Future camp's ever growing collection of music." 2011 Mixtape Under The Influence - Domo Genesis delivers a powerful mixtape with a lot more than references to his favourite herb. 2012 - No Idols is a collaboration with The Alchemist Reviewed as his best yet. Mike G 2010 album Ali - He's the most old school member of the group, packing a great g - funk type flow and lyrics relating to crime, money, ego, rap, sex, murder, and much more. Also available are the Mike Check Mixtape and Award Tour EP. Syd Tha Kyd Raunchboots EP Matt Martians Formed a duo with Syd Tha Kid called The Internet and released Purple Naked Ladies Tape in 2011. Hal Williams Formed a duo with Matt Martians called The Jet Age of Tomorrow aka The Super 3 and released albums 2010 - Voyager & 2011 - The Journey to the 5th Echelon. Jasper Dolphin Formed I Smell Panties with Tyler, The Creator, but is non musical. They've done a comedy TV show called The Loiter Squad. Taco Bennet Another non musical member involved with Loiter Squad. Also... BadBadNotGood - fans of Odd Furture who Tyler, The Creator supported to wider success. He's collaborated with them on a few tracks that appear on Youtube... Obviously been going for a few years now, can others point to other stuff I've missed? ChezGiven 0
I think there was some new Earl Sweatshirt stuff on the first NPR podcast of the year. Or maybe they were just rapping about him, I was pounding out a 10k run at the time so I missed the details. Obviously been a fan of Frank Ocean since we talked about the Nostalgia mixtape on here. I've got Goblin which is class, the search function doesn't pick up the YouTube clip but I think I hoyed up that Sandwitches track in the music thread. I think this year the whole lot of them are going to be releasing lots of stuff, or that's what I gathered from the NPR podcast anyway.
Happy Face 29
Aye, it was All Songs considered playing Chum that made me hunt out the other Earl Sweatshirt stuff that's out so far..... Already been in the "listening" thread but.... Mint. Been mostly listening to him and Tyler so far. Moving on to Mellowhype next.
