Cheeky (literal) fucking bastard.

Harry: "Newcastle United wanted him and Graham Carr (chief scout) doesn't make too many mistakes. Graham's got good judgement."

If his suggestions are that widely acknowledged we should start widely publicising that we're after shitty players as though we're chasing them on Carrs say so while quietly going about our business on the sly for those players we really want.

Also, we should start leaking awful stories suggesting we will lose the entire spine of our team...Krul, Coloccini, Santon, Ben Arfa, Ba....the lot....when only one has gone at the end of a window the relief will outweight the disappointment and the lack of investment again.

What had have we really got to attract players though these days if it's not money? It's certainly not the lure of coming to play for an ambitious club with top management. We're nowhere near London so that's out too.

All we've got is the supporters and the premiership going in our favour and as Gemmil pointed out yesterday, players aren't going to be that arsed when they retire whether or not they have memories of playing in front of 50k. They'll want to look back on trophies or the money in their bank.

The way we're operating these days will always put us at a disadvantage if we are going up against other teams for players, especially when as Stevie has said, we don't have people who love the club and the area trying to do the deals.

Its the window so we are all going to panic etc etc particularly following Remy, but lets remember than in the last couple of years we have managed to sign......

Tiote

Ben Arfa

Santon

Debuchy

Anita

Cabaye

Ba

Cisse

Some great players in there who have been quite happy to come here for the wages on offer. There will be plenty more out there.

I'm not suggesting we can't sign players (and good players at that). What I am saying is that if we are one of a number of teams in for them, there are a lot of teams (and I'm not even talking about about the likes of Manure, Citeh, Chelski and Arsenal) who we will lose out to because we simply wont show the ambition and by extension pay the wages that other clubs will pay. If we're up against Wigan, Stoke, Norwich, Villa etc we should still have an advantage but there are a number of teams (like QPR) who can offer what we no longer will.

My inner child still believes that we used Remy as a smokescreen while we tie up our real targets. B)

That has to be what's going on because after 6 years of running a club, they can't be so stupid as to risk relegation again. B)

They did that in the summer by not strengthening.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2013/jan/15/newcastle-alan-pardew-french-market

The overwhelming odds are that Ba's successor – not to mention one or two much-needed defensive reinforcements – will be found in France but the presence of seven French-speaking players – five of whom could be described as first choices – in Pardew's first-team squad is starting to cause some disquiet among fans. Suddenly St James' Park season ticket holders are worried about dressing-room cliques and the absence of the much-vaunted "British core" even Arsène Wenger now seems keen on restoring to Arsenal.

Nagging worries about suggestions of fault lines developing between Newcastle's French and Spanish speakers, and the sense that locals boys such as Shola Ameobi and Steven Taylor an in peril of becoming an endangered species, will hold little sway, though. Finance dictates that Mike Ashley, Newcastle's owner, will remain unmoved.

"There are clubs out there who are spending money that if they were in a real business they could not afford. That inflates it for everybody. For the sake of football, proper business sense has to be made." - Tony Fernandes

Is anyone genuinely bothered by that right now? Do we want more Taylor's and ameobis?

There are people out there genuinely bothered by that and it's staggering.

Not a single English player on this squad that is indespensible. And frankly, not a single one out there that has the value we are looking for either.

Ashleys business model makes sense- but more money should be spent because it would make sense in the long run. I think he is starting to realize that with this window but I've thought that before and won't hold my breath

I'm only guessing here but looking at their squad, I've had a guestimate at what each one earns, will be higher and lower for some in reality but if I'm vaguely right a club who get 18,000 max at every home game are paying out £838k a week in wages. Even if it's £100k either way how the fuck is that going to stand up when FFP comes in?
