Staff at The Wheatsheaf on Whitley Road, Benton, said the injured man came into the pub to ask for help. A man in his 40s was taken to hospital with injuries thought to be "consistent with a gunshot wound", police said. He is said to be in a "stable" condition. Northumbria Police said there may have been a disturbance in the car park before the shooting, which was reported just after 17:00 GMT. My brother in law called in just as it was all happening to drop something off and got stuck in there for a while as the police wouldn't let anyone out. He was mostly pissed off that he couldn't get out for a tab. Pleased my sister's at work tonight as she'd no doubt have been in there over otherwise.
