Meenzer 15739
Good on you Craig. One of my very best friends is currently transitioning in the other direction, if you will, and though he's not married it's not difficult to make the leap and imagine how heartbreaking a "forced divorce" situation must be. Craig 6700
Cheers both I'm still struggling big time with pro-nouns as you can probably tell from that post. That said for 35 years I've referred to her as he/him/brother. My Dad, bless him, still refers to her by her male name. That was changed legally last year but I don't have the heart to pull him up on it. Must be extremely hard to deal with this when its your own child. trophyshy 7084
A prescient demonstration of the disharmony between societal artefact and individual reality. We're trying to bolt discovery onto doctrine, I say the former is generally more important, but I have nothing to lose in thinking so. Thanks for sharing btw. Meenzer 15739
Which MPs voted and how: http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2013/feb/05/gay-marriage-gay-rights A few north-east MPs in the against/abstain camp. Particularly disappointed by Alan Beith. I've played Subbuteo at his house, I'd have accidentally stepped on a couple of the players if I'd known. Meenzer 15739
Did he have a Dukla Prague away kit? Not even a transformer, dodgy or otherwise. Him indoors has just stumbled in from a boozy night with friends and is busy making ralph noises in the bathroom. I've put a glass of water by the bed. Truly, this is the equality we've been fighting for.

ewerk 31228
Craig, I really don't know much about the transgender community but wouldn't your sister be 'labelled' as being gay? i.e. she's now a female who is sexually attracted to other women? I know that putting people in boxes is of no benefit, it's just that you objected to it being called the gay marriage bill so I'm curious.

Dr Gloom 22185
I'm atheist but would quite like to get married in a church. They're just pretty, aren't they? Yeah but church services are fucking dry man

SloopJohn 0
Mmm I still disagree. Everything else in life you choose to believe based on the evidence you have available. With faith, there is no evidence, there is nothing to weigh up, so there is no choice. So you don't think the New Testament has validity as historical evidence? SloopJohn 0
You're defining atheism as a typical theist would; I'm a negative atheist, I simply lack belief in God(s). I realise that I cannot disprove the existence of God and tbh this is of no interest to me now. Fair enough. Religious architecture was made by man. I find many things made by man beautiful. I'm not going to get into some debate about the philosophical nature of beauty, that would be as pointless as trying to prove there is no God. I was just trying to get you to question some of your ideas about beauty in the same way an atheist would try to get a Christian to think about the logic of his belief. If a Christian replied to you "this discussion is pointless" despite you trying to raise a point about the scientific validity of Jesus's miracles, would you accuse him of ducking a question? Glad I haven't voted for John Redwood ever, despite his offer to drive people to polling booths I've always thought he was a bit of a twit. That's a great post Craig, never knew the law in place that denotes a married couple must divorce as a result of gender transition. That must be ridiculously hard enough for your sister's family to come to terms with, without having to contend with their marriage suddenly declared illegal. The Fish 10972
Yeah but church services are fucking dry man Some can be, but all of the marriages I've been to recently have been C of E and all of them have been quick, good humoured and inclusive of all faiths. One Vicar had us pissing ourselves with some of the stuff he came out with. After the vows he did a quick monologue saying "You will meet better looking people than your spouse, but too late, you've made a commitment now." and while suggesting that love completes us and how everyone needs love in them he said "Just like every ring needs a finger in it" Hate to say, but the majority of Catholic services I've been have been long, dry and full of dark foreboding. I've yet to go to a Sikh, Hindu, Jewish, or any other religions' wedding. Dunno why but I've an assumption that the Jewish wedding would be more like the C of E (in terms of brevity and levity), anyone tell me if I'm right or wrong? There seems to be scope both ways for other rites as well - I went to a CofE baptism a few years ago which was very catholic in emphasis but another that was very much like you describe. My mate got married in a CofE church but they brought the catholic priest in to bless it - I remember the contrast in tone of couple vesus God in the two bits.
