Meenzer 15560
See, this should theoretically be easier, since my taste should have shifted less in the meantime. But it's not. Anyway, a fairly spontaneous brainstorm again: The Mountain Goats - The Life Of The World To Come Red Sparowes - Every Red Heart Shines Toward the Red Sun The Cooper Temple Clause - Kick Up The Flames, And Let The Fire Burn Loose iLiKETRAiNS - Progress Reform Trisha Yearwood - Heaven, Heartache And The Power Of Love The Gift - Film Christian Kjellvander - Songs From A Two-Room Chapel Justin Townes Earle - Midnight At The Movies Kathy Mattea - Coal Sigur Rós - () No room for a Decemberists album despite them being arguably the most sing-a-longable band of the decade. I may have to rethink this.
Happy Face 29
No room for a Decemberists album despite them being arguably the most sing-a-longable band of the decade Oh aye, make mine a top 18 and add The Hazards of Love.
Alex 35120
Mine would be quite arbitrary, i.e. the only 10 albums I bought that were released in that decade.
Meenzer 15560
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm I know "Silent Alarm" is better than "A Weekend In The City" in terms of general consistency, but the latter has a couple of songs that shit all over anything on the former. The eternal debate on how to judge an album, I suppose - by "average rating" or in terms of those few tracks that really do it for you even in the presence of some obvious filler? Meenzer 15560
Oh aye, make mine a top 18 and add The Hazards of Love. In that case, make mine a top 11 and apologise to Sufjan for the obvious omission. Stupid brainstorms.
Happy Face 29
Picaresque and Crane Wife are unbelievably good too obviously like. I don't seem to have any Wilco in any of my lists. Where's that rubber....

Where's that rubber.... See that's it, I think I set higher standards for a Decemberists album so if there's even a few hints of filler (The Bagman's Gambit, When the War Came...) I'm likely to mentally mark down far more than I would for any other artist. OTOH I can't have five of the ten 2000s spots belonging to the Meloy gang, as much as they may actually deserve it, so hey.

The eternal debate on how to judge an album, I suppose - by "average rating" or in terms of those few tracks that really do it for you even in the presence of some obvious filler? I think sometimes it's about what the album meant to you personally... Silent alarm was around during a pretty good patch in my life and so it always gives me a nice feeling listening to it... I guess as always lots of different factors play a part in what is a very subjective area to comment on

Ayatollah Hermione 13894
These are the first 10 that come to mind so this is by no ways definitive Elliott Smith: Figure 8 New Pornographers: Twin Cinema Arctic Monkeys: Favourite Worst Nightmare Mars Volta: Deloused Kanye: College Dropout The Shins: Chutes Too Narrow Spoon: Girls Will Tell Wolf Parade: At Mount Zoomer (prefer it to the debut) Arcade Fire: Funeral Sufjan Stevens: Illinois shit, you've also got Maximo Park's debut, the other Wolf Parade album, the other New Pornographers albums, The National, early Ryan Adams, Radiohead, Neko Case, Sleater-Kinney's The Woods, The Decemberists, The Roots, The Black Keys, Fiery Furnaces, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, White Stripes, Madvillain, Outkast, Queens of the Stone Age, Flaming Lips, Pete Molinari, The Johnny Cash American albums and that's just me off the top of my head. The 2000s were brilliant because you had access to pretty much every genre of music you could want at your fingertips. EDIT: Actually, I'd shift at least 5 of those out my top 10. I completely forgot about Hissing Fauna and Satanic Panic in the Attic by of Montreal. The latter is one of my favourite albums ever. The Fish 10874
Because most of my music library is *ahem* acquired *ahem hem* It doesn't have a lot of the info that would make shit like this a helluva lot easier for a man with such a tangled memory. I can recite much of the Howay 5-0 commentary, but I couldn't pick my top albums from the previous decade. I think it's because, my tastes have become more expansive as I've got older. Or perhaps it's just because I'm addled. Edited December 7, 2012 by The Fish

From 2004-onwards was when I started properly getting into music I'll like for the rest of my life. Until then, I'd bought albums but not sure what I was thinking looking back. Being able to go to a torrent site and download reams of acclaimed American indie music must seem like cheating to people who had to buy their records every week.
