ADP 0
And it's an unfortunate fact that the Poppy has become politicised particularly in relation to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Especially when you consider what it's meant to be all about. Yup.
ewerk 30221
That's not the point i was making, there's a picture of him floating around that shows him holding a "free derry" sign, and if he's not wearing one because it has something to do with him being "republican" then living in england, paying taxes "to the man" etcetc is slightly hypocritical. I don't think it's ridiculous at all to expect people to stand by their principles chance or not, if he feels strongly enough about it then he shouldn't be able to be "bought" then should he. He's not being bought though, he's being employed by SAFC. Being a Republican doesn't necessarily mean that he has to hate everything to do with England (though the two do often go hand in hand). I wasn't ascribing that view to you, Ant. I don't think McClean's a hypocrite either though. As Ewerk points out, he's paid by SAFC. Aye he pays taxes to the UK government but so what? He's obliged to do that but it doesn't then mean you sign up in agreement to all sorts of things when you do that. The people calling him a cunt miss the point of poppies as much as the people who vehmently oppose wearing them. It's about personal remembrance of tragic loss of life, it's not a fucking ego trip. NJS 4365
I think in some ways the idea of making it about all wars and maybe not deliberately just the British army is the problem. If it was "limited" to the two world wars I think more people would feel more comfortable about supporting it (I know I would) as its only when its extended to Iraq, Ireland and other places where the British army have been cunts that politics come into it. I can understand why its all lumped together but I think that has a down side as well.
David Kelly 1219
And Donald Sutherland fought for them iirc. Nah, he was in charge of the tanks that Kelly used to steel the Nazi gold!
ewerk 30221
His taxes like the donations to the british legion will be going to fund some of the things he'll be objecting to though ewerk (if that's why he didn't wear one), he either believes in the reasons he didn't wear one or he doesn't, he either has proper principles or he is picking and choosing what suits him which makes him even more of a knob. i'm not fussed who wears what, but if his reasoning behind making a point to objecting is what we all assume it is, then he's a wee scroat who needs to wind his neck in. By the same rationale then any Republican working and paying tax in NI is supporting the British military. Anyone purchasing any goods and paying VAT is supporting the government and military. The argument is akin to 'well if you like the Republic that much then move there'. At the same time I don't think anyone expects McClean to have the intelligence to have thought through his 'principles'.
Happy Face 29
Who brought taxes into it? Ridiculous. He's just had the choice of which strip to wear and he's gone without the poppy, without saying a word to anyone else about their choice to wear a poppy or what he thinks it represents or anything negative whatsoever. His conscience has guided him in a personal decision. He's not pro-actively looking to undermine the government and armed forces ffs. He participated in the minutes silence, paying his respects as he should.
Happy Face 29
...I was more annoyed that no-one was selling poppies around Newcastle and neither of the Newsagents I went to for one were selling them either.

He wasn't given a choice though, all the players were expected to wear the top with the poppy and he made a conscious decision to wear one without a poppy. I'm not saying he should be hung as a traitor, it just makes him a bit of a dick imo.

ewerk 30221
He did have a choice but it wasn't like the kit man walked round and held both of them in front of him and asked him which one he preferred. He was expected to follow the club's decision.

It's supposition to think that he wasn't expected to follow the club's decision? Hardly. I agree though, the whole thing is a storm in a teacup. ewerk 30221
Given that his manager wore a poppy in the post match press conference I'm guessing that his failure to do so during the match was an oversight rather than an attempt to make any sort of political point. CleeToonFan 1
Didnt De Valenti prefer a German victory to a British one before the war? There's clearly a connection between the two. essembeeofsunderland 811
I don't know if it's true but i was told that the treatment centres that the HFH are financing, with the first having been built in Catterick, are immediately handed over to the RBL,and they then have to find the money for the day to day running. In my earrlier post,i should have said the HFH had the `do' in a local pub. Edited November 13, 2012 by essembeeofsunderland
