NEWCASTLE United FA Cup hero Alf McMichael has passed away at the age of 78.

Born in Belfast in 1927, Alf joined the Magpies in September 1949 and was once famously described by the great Stanly Matthews as "one of the best left backs I have ever played against."

Alf had 14 seasons at St. James' Park and made 433 appearances as well as being capped 40 times by Northern Ireland.

He was part of the Newcastle side that defeated Arsenal to lift the FA Cup in 1952, but a broken wrist prevented him playing in the 1951 victory over Blackpool and he again missed out in 1955 when Manchester City were beaten at Wembley because of ligament trouble.

Newcastle United send their condolences to Alf's family at this sad time.

Souness' training regime has had far reaching effects!

RIP Alf.
