Craig 6682
Literally nobody gave a shit when Wonga sponsored blackpool. This. Who seriously gives a toss what name is on the shirt?
ewerk 30385
I'd prefer that they didn't become our shirt sponsor but if they did then I could live with it. On the other hand, playing in the Wonga Arena would simply be embarrassing. By comparison the name 'Sports Direct Arena' seems positively classy. Kitman 2204
The only problem I have with wonga is that it's a shit name. Exactly
McFaul 35
This. Who seriously gives a toss what name is on the shirt? Me. Imagine the brother of Stefan Kuntz became a billionaire owning Kuntz Gas, and he decided to branch in to football sponsoring teams. How would you like it if it said "Kuntz" on the toon shirt? My issue with Wonga is it cheapens NUFC, and the actual company itself pray on skint people by charging them extortionate rates, as they can't get finance anywhere else. I consider myself a world weary, cynical bastard but surely you have to care about some things. There's a difference between caring and accepting you cant do fuck all about it. After every thing thats happened since 2007, I think its fair to say that most fans are weary with it all. Its also fair to say that most fans are less weary when the team is finishing fifth, winning games and buying good players. Didnt hear one chant aginst this or Ashley at the weekend. PaddockLad 17130
I think its all a ploy so Ashley can keep SD as the stadiumm name. Shirts only, keep our eyes off the "hidden" bonus in all this.
JawD 99
I'd have a massive issue if it effected the stadium name, but we are told it wont. As for the shirts, well Id like to say Morally I think its wrong, but really when it comes down to it, its just a bit shit isnt it? Not only is Wonga a morally corrupt company but the name itself is wank (to coin a stevie phrase).

I consider myself a world weary, cynical bastard but surely you have to care about some things. I see it and I really really don't care, moralising about a sponsor is ridiculous. If Wonga are so bad, how come they are a perfectly legal and allowed to trade as they do ? The UAE (the folks behind The Emirates) regime kill dissenting people. How about we got sponsored by BAE Systems, blue riband British company, everyone would think that was brilliant, BAE also are second largest arms manufacturer on the planet. Kid Dynamite 7011
More confirmation on twitter today that this is for a shirt sponsor only, no stadium naming rights. Again, £24mil to have their name on our shirt for 36months? Yes please

Again, £24mil to have their name on our shirt for 36months? Yes please That's fine, but not everybody has a comfortable life with a decent income. This company exploit people, borderline immoral if you ask me, and we are promoting this brand via the biggest institution (NUFC), in the second poorest region (The North East) in the country. Tampax, Durex, even Liquid Gold poppers would've been better sponsors than these.

I'd have the same objection to either of those. I also think there's a difference between illegal an immoral. After all there's no guarantee that those who make the laws are ethical. I think as a society you can make broad moral judgements regardless of legality - for example on topics like homosexuality - and I judge Wonga to be immoral and I don't want them associated with what remains of our good name. Good points, very much agree....however, the North East was also home to Northern Rock and we wore that name on our shirts up until the middle of last season, 3 years after they had to be bailed out to the tune of 37 billion quid, all from taxpayers money. Wonga are morally bankrupt, NR went bankrupt and every one of us are paying that price. The government are using it and other financial fuck ups as an excuse to slash everything to bits. Wonga didnt cause any of that but are a successful business probably because of the likes of NR. It is a fuckin awful word though.

I'd be interested to see how many of the families that do have tried giving up sky, booze and fags to save money first? I'm aware thats a sweeping generalisation and doesnt apply to everyone, but I work first hand with an awful lot of families that spunk their free money off the government up the wall. There are jobs available to those who want them.

Kid Dynamite 7011
Caulkin making a valid point about bookies sponsoring a lot of clubs. The same bookies that leave an awful lot of gambling addicts unable to put food on the table. The same bookies that an awful lot of people on this board use. There's a lot of hypocrisy around Wonga atm. Breweries, bookies, corrupted banks are fine. Money lenders are 'morally wrong' though. . . .
Andrew 4723
Agree with you there. Football long since gave up on morals when it comes to sponsors. My main issue is that the logos crap tbh
JawD 99
There is one thing lending money and another lending money easier, targeted at the low-mid income and charging massive APR. We are working class club (I view us as anyway) and I think its more a sensitive issue than say BAE locally. Again, more so its just a shit name. OK so they are immoral, when you buy clothing, trainers etc do you check where the stuff is made, what the pay rates are like, what the health and safety/working conditions records are like before you buy ??? As for Wonga in particular, I wonder why these folks who use their service need to, pressure from respectable companies maybe, got ot pay the gas/elec/bank/mortgage etc. crap company (yes) crap logo (yes) money the colour of everyone else's (yes) end of. Show me a money making organisation that isn't immoral, you know what, if football thought about it and paid players reasonable sums, there'd be no need to have adverts on shirts. Who creates the pressure where the target market needs the cash and thus accepts, via necessity, the service Wonga provide ?? Football as a whole was "working class" it is no longer, be it NUFC or anyone else.
Toonpack 9303
This post says a lot about your character. Says the "gentleman" who defends/champions drunken, foul mouthed behaviour to the detriment of other paying spectator's enjoyment. If I really evaluated about how companies made their cash I'd never buy anything ever again and would be wearing a hand woven grass suit, which would do as food in an emergency.
