TheMoog 0
I've come to the conclusion after a bit of consideration and the renaming of the ground back to St James Park that I've got no issue with us being sponsored by Wonga.com at all. On the grounds of whether Wonga are a moralistic company I personally don't care and while I'm sure it'll upset some folk the only people that fall foul of loan sharks and the like are those that don't live within their means. On a side note I care especially little for the chavs, scumbags and wasters that have either done nothing with their lives, don't make the effort or spend their cash (probably from benefits) on fags, booze and full Sky subs that fall in to the category of 'payday' lenders. There's very few people I would consider vulnerable to companies like Wonga, it's their choice whether to use them, if they can't pay them back it's nobody else's fault. The Fish 10793
Absolutely spot on. Btw In what sort of establishment, and where, does Mr Baker get his shit made ?? It's spun by well fed silk worms that are serenaded by angels while they sit upon the knees of a merry Bacchus; the lap of luxury one might say. TheMoog 0
Hook, line and sinker. Aye, but why would I care? What's the alternative? Keep it as the Sports Direct Arena? Besides, I've got not issue with Wonga.com

They were completely conned as well - but I hate whatabboutery like that - yes they are cunts but so are these etc etc. I don't give a shit who sponsors any other team - all I know now as I said earlier in the thread, the association with tat and sleaze is complete. I would post what I think Ashley deserves but I understand I'd now be jailed.

I think it's just because Wonga are openly distasteful, instead of the companies that act abhorrently beneath a veneer of respectability, am I right? No, I despise "respectable" companies just as much - I think the way Tesco for example have destroyed thousands of shops is terrible but I just find companies whose whole ethos is to kick people while they're down to be that little bit worse. NJS 4375
So I'm guessing you'd have railed against a Gambling company? Probably - though I'd argue that people of all incomes and assets gamble whereas Wonga targets those in difficulties. I can see the similarity in terms of exploiting human weakness to a certain extent but its still about them having an edge of cuntishness. I'm not stupid enough to argue that I'd rather have a "nice" company and forego more money - the financial side of the club is important but I think a degree of ethics would have been nice (yes I am hopelessly idealistic). In all honesty I think the deliberate PR stunt of the ground name underlines that they know its a bit iffy - otherwise why would you come up with a nice token appeasement otherwese? I think the stadium rights thing is less about appeasing us and more about value. Initially Ashley was stating it would be £10m, wasn't he? Well this £8m for shirts is a reasonable deal for Wonga and given nobody else has come in for the Stadium rights, to tack it on for nowt costs Ashley nowt, gets his company's name in the papers again for a week or so and keeps the Stadia rights as a possibility for future sponsors. Seems to be an even split on the board between massive outrage and those who couldnt give a shit My first reaction was disgust but this quickly slid in to apathy when I considered it more and realised its not so different to many others when it comes down to it. A bigger stink will be made if we sign no one this next window (not from this money, just in general)
Guest Your Name Here
The whole thing is a load of bollocks. It's a shitty brand to be associated with, but as many have said most brands have dirty secrets when you scratch the surface. The difference here is you don't have to scratch the surface and it's understandably not gone down well in many quarters. Reports reckon the deal is worth £24m over four years, or six million a season, which is fuck all for a shirt deal nowadays, let alone a shirt plus stadium naming rights package. Dekka reckons it's the most lucrative deal the club have ever signed, but the club signed a £25m five year deal with NR. As always, confusion and division rule under MA.
