Gejon 2
Given was brilliant, had his flaws but more than made up for them with truly world class saves. Don't like the way he left but will always have fond memories of him.
McFaul 35
Peolple there are not just saying shay is not good enough now but some are saying he's never been top class and rate van der sar, cech friedal etc as better than he ever was - I have always rated shay given as a top class keeper and am surprised at some villa fans saying ask Newcastle fans what they think and no Newcastle fan would prefer him to krul? At his peak given was a great keeper wasn't he? One of the best 5 keepers there's ever been in the Premiership, certainly in terms of shot stopping. Sadly, he looks a pale shadow of his old self these days.
McFaul 35
Given was the best keeper in Newcastle's history, although some might argue that Mike Hooper was. Agreed, and without a shadow of a doubt. The comments about his command of the area are MASSIVELY exaggerated, although his kicking was a minor deficiency. McFaul 35
I'm biased when it comes to Shay, was one of my favourite players, The best keeper we've had and one of the best of his generation for that position in the world. Spot on. People highlighting his very minor flaws are attempting to be clever imo. I wouldn't have swapped him for anyone other than Buffon 97-2005. StellarStripes 0
Was top class but looks very ordinary now (based mainly on the Euros). I wouldn't have him back now because he's not in the same class as Krul but that doesn't change how good he was when he was here. This. Was class when he was here, left in a bad way and ultimately it turned out the be what turned his career to shit. I find it hilarious that he is now sat on a bench at a shitty midlands club. Krul is by far and away a much better keeper.
sweetleftpeg 0
Thing is, if he didn't leave because of the money but because of being unhappy with the regime as we're lead to believe, then he's not going to want to come back while Ashley and Llambias are here. Dr Gloom 22165
top keeper in his prime for us. arguably the best in the premier league for a few seasons. looks like he's over the hill now.
Howmanheyman 33857
We probably would have stayed up if Given hadn't left in the Jan transfer window the margins were that tight. Best keeper we've ever had in my time by a mile despite his weaknesses which as Stevie suggests are overplayed in this thread. Krul could well better him but early days on that score. Guest CabayeAye
Given was a top, top keeper for us. Arguably the best in the league at the time. He totally fucked himself over by leaving us though and is now well and truly past it. We've been very lucky with keepers for the last decade. It's just a shame that we couldn't keep hold of Forster to cover for Krul. We're in deep shit if Krul gets a serious injury...
jonasjuice 0
This. Was class when he was here, left in a bad way and ultimately it turned out the be what turned his career to shit. I find it hilarious that he is now sat on a bench at a shitty midlands club. Krul is by far and away a much better keeper. Nah i find it sad, would like to see him playing still. He left for at least partly footballing reasons and I wouldn't have begrudged him success with Man City. I'd echo Ant and Stevie's sentiments, maybe my judgement's clouded by a rose tinted view of the era as a whole but I loved him and think he was a massive part of our success. Happy Face 29
To have had 3 keepers like Given, Harper and Krul to inspire confidence after the less inspiring likes of Pavel, Hooper, Perez, Hislop...who am I forgetting? We've done well between the sticks for a while.
