Eastie 0
Forgive me intruding , a villa fan in peace, on the villa forums shay is getting quite a bit of criticism, people saying Newcastle fans wouldnt have him back, Guzan better all round keeper than given ever was etc , given has always had massive flaws etc. I have to defend him as I think he has been a top class keeper for many years and would like to know the Newcastle fans views on shay given as a goalkeeper because I think some vill a fans are being very quick to criticise him- thank you and best wishes! Tooj 17
Personally I think he's finished now. (Based on his performances at the Euros and early season Villa form) However when he was with us he was without doubt a world class shot stopper and kept us in many games. This often made up for his deficiencies in both his kicking and command of the box. He gets a lot of stick for leaving when he did, although I won't hold that against him as I can't blame him for doing so.
David Kelly 1260
Was top class but looks very ordinary now (based mainly on the Euros). I wouldn't have him back now because he's not in the same class as Krul but that doesn't change how good he was when he was here.
Eastie 0
Peolple there are not just saying shay is not good enough now but some are saying he's never been top class and rate van der sar, cech friedal etc as better than he ever was - I have always rated shay given as a top class keeper and am surprised at some villa fans saying ask Newcastle fans what they think and no Newcastle fan would prefer him to krul? At his peak given was a great keeper wasn't he? Edited September 16, 2012 by Eastie
Tooj 17
I wouldn't say he was a great keeper, as I mentioned his shot stopping was world class but his kick was quite poor at times and he couldn't command his box. I'd rate somebody like Van Der Sar higher than him in his prime.

Kitman 2207
Shay's biggest assets were his agility and reflexes. He was a great keeper for us but I don't think he was one of the greats. Schmeichel for instance was a great shot stopper but also had great presence and imo intimidated the opposition; whereas Given lacked presence and always looked, well, lacking in size imo. He was particularly poor at dealing with corners and I don't recall him ever saving a pelanty. As Tooj says great shot stopper and kept us in many a game. Also great fitness record. Sounds like he's over the hill now, wouldn't get in ahead of Krul and wouldn't have him back to warm the bench. Given has never been quite the same since he was injured by Marlon Harewood in a 2-0 win at West Ham 6 years ago (almost to the day). However, what appears really to have finished him was the season of inactivity at Man City in 09/10 - I wouldn't be surprised if he retired next summer if Guzan keeps his place
Tooj 17
Better at his peak than krul or not? It's too early to say as Krul is just starting out his career. I think Krul has the potential to be better than Given simply because his game is more rounded.

I believe he's on over £50000 a week. Edited September 16, 2012 by Eastie

There haven't been many better shot stoppers than Given in his prime but his command of the box on crosses and corners has always been abysmal and has stopped him from ever reaching the heights of Cech, Van Der Saar etc I don't think Friedel was any better than him mind. He was very good for us and as Tooj said he saved us on many occasions but he's finished now tbh. Edited September 16, 2012 by Howay

Eastie 0
My grandparents were from the north east mining area and always had a soft spot for the toon- glad to see you have a decent side again and are doing well. Seems maybe I was wrong about shay, I always saw him a real top keeper but I guess highlights only show the best parts. About the Krul thing, at his current age Krul is much more well rounded than Given at that age. We'll see how Krul develops mind as Given in his prime was a very good keeper for us. Thanks man. Personally I think the demise of Villa has been hugely exaggerated, your squad is really young and your manager is trying to impose a style which was so different in contrast to the turgid rubbish that McLeish had you playing. First game of the season against West Ham you played some decent stuff, just couldn't cope with their physicality. I think longer term Lambert will do really well at Villa, certainly have them back in the top half anyway. Just depends if he is given the time. Eastie 0
Cheers, I think lambert has bought young and hungry players and we did really well against Swansea. Top half is realistic I think as the team will only improve but to be honest it's refreshing to have a good manager, o Neill spent fortunes and is far from the messiah he was portrayed- 50-50 split over him even when he was here, I do not see him doing much for your neighbours. He did ok at villa but spent well over £140m and wasted a lot. Lambert has tapped into the Dutch league similar to how pardew did with the French league and I hope we have found some quality with Vlaar, Holman and al-ahmedi. Tooj 17
He's doing for them exactly what we predicted. Spending money on British based players for more than they are worth (wages wise with Johnson) and they're so predictable when they are playing. It's like a 1-9-1 and hope somebody conjures up something magical for them. It happened a lot when he took over, how many wonder goals did either Sessegon, Larsson or Gardner score for them. When they stopped their wins dried up. I've saw most of their games in full this season and they've been dominated in every game, yet they seem to be converting any chance they get, like Fletcher yesterday and his two against Swansea as well. Also I think McClean is quite overrated too and seems to be getting found out (he's all left foot without a trick in his locker). I don't think he once attacked his full-back on Saturday, just passed the ball backwards instead of running at Kelly. Quite Damien Duff in his performances for us. Eastie 0
It will not be long before the Mackem fans see through o neill, heskey, sidwell, harewood, and many others were on £65000 a week and shit, he plays one way, no plan b , and has his favourites and is arrogant and conceited- very much an old school manager past his prime- you have no worries with him up the road. The day he left villa many celebrated his departure - some players too. Our mistake was employing poor managers after him until lambert. Well I'm off to bed up at 5am for work- many thanks for your hospitality and making me welcome. Edited September 16, 2012 by Eastie
@yourservice 67
Given was the best keeper in Newcastle's history, although some might argue that Mike Hooper was.
NJS 4411
I've never seen anyone that comes close to Given at his best - there were long spells when I was genuinely surprised if he was beaten. I never understood why Bobby seemed to rate Harper as someone who could keep shay out as he did for spells here and there - no comparison imo. I understood why he left but I admit to being wryly amused at how it turned out for him at Man City.
The Fish 10971
He had a lot of opportunities to show off his shot-stopping prowess. Playing behind Bramble, Boumsong, Dabizas, O'Brien leaves you open to fuck loads of shots. Class 'keeper but because he wasn't great dealing with crosses or marshalling the box, he's just outside the real greats like Schmeichel for me. NYD 0
Shay is a great goalie past his best, it's a pity the Villa manager has sussed this out as I'd love to see Villa go down.
