Tooj 17
http://www.sundaysun.co.uk/sport/newcastle-united/2012/09/16/alan-pardew-defends-lack-of-spending-at-nufc-79310-31842318/ ALAN PARDEW last night mounted a fierce defence of Mike Ashley’s spending policy and asked disgruntled Newcastle fans to be thankful for the current state of their club. Criticism over the United owner’s lack of spending during this summer’s transfer window has noticeably increased over the past week, with fans voicing their concerns on radio phone-in shows and across social media. Newcastle failed to land the big-name signing so many had hoped to see, and with some top players lacking form so far this season, coupled with injuries to key stars such as captain Fabricio Coloccini, the squad suddenly appears quite threadbare. Pardew was well aware of the mutterings from some supporters ahead of tomorrow night’s crucial Premier League clash at Everton. However, the Toon boss said: “You have to look over the period of 18 months that I’ve been here. I think we have spent very well and wisely. Mike Ashley “You could argue that we should have gone out and spent (more) money on players, but then if it didn’t work out that would have been a bigger criticism. We spent the money wisely and I think our fans should be thankful for that. “Graham Carr did a tremendous job in targeting players and we have done our best to develop the ones we already have, and we think there are one or two at the club that the fans haven’t seen yet. “They haven’t seen Sammy Ameobi this season or much of Romain Amalfitano. Cheick Tiote has hardly played. “So I think we should be thankful for what we’ve got. We have a competitive squad. “I have no problem with these radio debate shows, I really don’t. “I do think they tend to lean on the negative rather than the positive. “You have to look at the bigger picture. “We had a fantastic season last year and this time we’ve had two European games and two international breaks; the season hasn’t really got going. “There has been this talk because, in my view, the fans have had some time on their hands. “Now we have a run of games and I think we’ll prove that we are a good side.”
The Fish 10963
He can't very well come out and slate the window, or the current squad, especially before a tricky game. Not really going to pay much attention to this to be honest.
Monroe Transfer 0
indeed, he didn't need to come out with that rhetoric at all though either more to the point. So he should just mutter "no comment" to the press?
PaddockLad 17643
he's right, the season hasnt got going yet. But all this does smack of a (public) return to the days of "puppet Pardew".. Perhaps it is too early to judge, closer to christmas may give a better view...Stoke got out of their Europa group last season...didnt do much for their league campaign mind
JawD 99
He is right, its too soon to start slating the side after only a couple of games. But he needs to fuck off with the whole "we are not worthy" bollocks. No wonder people are pissed off when we expected strengthening in the window. I do think many are over reacting as if we have weakened and a load of teams around us suddenly increased 150%, they havent. I do have some concern about our alleged "trouble in camp" when it was that togetherness that seemed to pull us through some games last season. As ever, Ill reserve judgement a bit yet but by fuck they had better spend in the next window.

wolfy 12
The lack of buying could see a full on emergence of the nurtured talent we already have at hand and the trust that the majority will come good and be a big part of the season. We have got some real talent that we seem to forget about and all are 1 year older, wiser and stronger. Our squad isn't as bare as we might think. Monroe Transfer 0
talk about the games coming up not the failed transfer window So if he's asked a question pertaining to the window, he should start talking about the games coming up? Gloom is (probably) right.

ChezGiven 0
indeed, he didn't need to come out with that rhetoric at all though either more to the point. He will have been asked to address the fan's feeling regarding the window. The content of the journalist's article is determined by the question they pose. He has been asked this a lot as its on everyone's minds. Last season it was how we would cope without the irreplaceable Nolan, Barton and Enrique. This year the early season complaints are probably easier to answer seeing as we have retained all the players who did so well last year. Whether we over-achieved last year, under-achieve this year etc won't change the fact that people are being quite 'simple' in expecting one season to lead to a change in how we do business. The fact we were only a million off what was needed for Debuchy is very frustrating buts it's sticking to a plan. If we had upped an offer for one player and paid more than we wanted and then didn't with another player, then I'd be very worried. The consistency of how we do things shows there is at least a strategy, we can debate at length whether it's the right one as that needs to take account of many different factors. As an aside, as much as we needed 3 players, if we'd signed Debuchy and not Anita I think the fans would be feeling more satisfied.
