Park Life 71
That's fucking scary. I remember when I used to do that shit with me heart sinking into me stomach and ending up in me socks. Two coffee and brandy's and a spliff to get out the house.

Unfortunately, if the parents don't get with the programme, then for the most part the kids are gonna struggle. I hope there's some substance to the inspire a generation thing though. How many atheletes though did we see there with big parents? Chris Hoy, Ben Swift are two Brits I can name. Then we have that South African Swimmer Chad, his ol' fella Bert was a big unit. McFaul 35
Friend was stroppily demanding to know who the Brazilians were, and I was trying to explain that, while we might not know them, they may be huge in Brazil. I pointed out that the majority of the planet wouldn't have a scooby who Ed Sheeran, Tinie Tempah or half the others were. She wouldn't have it. proof positive women are thick as shit. She'd be right. Go to any country on earth and they're listening to our music more than any other, more than yank. The Olympics was much better than anyone expected, it might sound nationalistic but in terms of performance not just UK, history, sites, fan participation, venues, spirit, passion, London 2012 was by far and away the greatest sporting spectacle there has ever been. What country in the world could compete with a bike ride around the world's most famous palace, with a swim through the waters of one of the world's most famous park. Or a marathon running adjacent to one of the world's most historic and famous towers and bridges. To top it all off the weather was good. I'm sorry like in terms of everything I have discussed that Olympics can not be bettered. The thing is we are a pretty open country, I think alongside America, maybe even more so, there are more people aware of our heritage, history and culture than of any other country. I think that's hard to argue with, and some daft cunt like J69 probably will but it's a fact.
Gemmill 46020
Aye it was class, I don't think many would argue. I'm just not sure if the message of the games was "....and THAT is why we're better than everyone else."

luckyluke 2
Just got in (well, half an hour ago). Brilliant night at the stadium. Obviously (as I've said on Facebook and I'm sure plenty of you will have said in this thread - I'll go and read it now ) it was a mixed bag entertainment-wise and seemed pretty messy as a concept, but closing ceremonies are always a bit like that, the anti-climax after all the drama. Main thing was the party vibe around the place was brilliant to be a part of. Dead glad the volunteers got the huge ovation they deserved too. Bollocks, man. That was London 2012 already. Watching it from home was painful. Sometimes I think we overplay our "great musical heritage" card - if you look at Beijing, Greece etc pop music only forms a small part of their history and what they're about yet pretty much our entire show was music from the last 60 years, and most of it from towards the end of that period, dirge after dirge sung by past it has-beens. At least Jessie J sang something fresher than fifteen years old.
Monkeys Fist 43063
It will take something very spectacular to top it. I'm predicting Rio's opening will be centred on a half size Christ the Redeemer dishing out Viagra to thousands of cloned Pele midgets dressed in thongs, Ronaldo ( the proper one) will light the flame by lacing a flaming football from the hands of a Favela child as they both freefall from an airship, then collapsing in a fit when he lands. All accompanied by tits, lots of brown tits.
McFaul 35
I think it was so good, you might even see another Olympics in this country in the next 50 years. Personally we deserve a World Cup too, but unless England won the fucka I don't think you'd get the same feeling of pride in what we've put on. I'm sure non-British people will want a sick bucket at this comment, but I'm sure most of the world was looking on in awe. It was THE most perfect Olympics, you could say Rome and Athens have marginally more history because they're slightly older, but London is arguably the most famous noble city on earth, it's certainly the wealthiest and most important in terms of finance, as much as those of us who have worked there hate it as much as we love it, the good bits of London are something that have no equal in my view. We like to portray ourselves as cunts in England, and many people around the world do, but generally is there a country more accepting of other cultures, more passionate about sport, more willing to change and embrace the future? There might be but someone will have to tell me who it is.

Aye but there was a lot of shite music in there. Mind I love that Tinie Tempah song, but the Spice Girls were shit, and as much as I love Oasis Liam sang like he'd been snorting speed mixed with ketamine. All the amazing songs we've made here, and there was some shit. Can't grumble though. One thing I'd have changed, whether anyone likes to admit it or not, football is the most important game in the world, and it's the most important thing in this country. I honestly believe football is part of who we are, as much as anyone, and I'd have liked it to be represented more in the ceremonies. Newcastle United is more a part of this area, and is more important, than say Hannover is in Germany for example.

I did think that considering it was a party for the athletes it was a bit unfair that they had to wait outside for half of it. I'm not saying it should be a history lesson, just some other form of entertainment than a very tired and aged Who would have been an improvement. At least there was some Morris dancing when Eric Idle came on. And I didn't say this last night, but hats off to Gary Barlow.
Holden McGroin 6783
Im sick of hearing of "Lets hope its inspired the younger generation" Fuck that. Lets hope its inspired the fat fucking parents too! Kids look up to their parents. They need inspiration from them. ChezGiven 0
What's been the French reaction to the full event Chez, and Parky what's the kraut thoughts on how it's went? You may have missed it but i posted a little bit about the poll in L'equipe and the comments of the French cycling Director. After Zac Purchase's seat came off and Hindes' interview after the team event there was a twitter hashtag #GBJOFacts. (JO = Olympic games) which took the piss out of us cheating to win events. It was meant to be humourous but (here comes the power of narrative) started people discussing the performance of team GB, mix that in with the inherent chauvinism of your typical frog and suddenly they were discussing the twitter trend on France TV and openly suggesting we might be cheating. Then a French journalist (wrapped up by now in the developing narrative) basically accuses us of cheating in a question to David Cameron. The poll in L'equipe at this point has 70% of French thinking we cheated in the velodrome. Then the 'piece de resistance' is the Cycling Director on Rue89.com saying that we had taken the Mavic wheels and done something with them with McLaren, thats why we wrapped the wheels up after each race. She then suggests ("maybe i am fantasising") that there was some sort of mechanism inside that used inertia to give us a speed advantage. Utter wankers and thankfully the discussions on this on LeMonde and L'equipe (the latter putting their own opinion on the poll that team GB's cyclists prepared better) were split between uninformed, factually incorrect arguments agreeing with some sort of anglo-saxon conspiracy and informed posters basically saying they were a national disgrace and showed why people around the world think the french are wankers (i'm paraphrasing here). It would be unfair to focus only on that issue though because the majority of the coverage focussed on the sport, the french team and the success of the games. They are, like the Germans, gutted that we absolutely tanked them in the medals table. No matter what people would like to think, the power and impact of success at the olympics does suggest a 'betterness', that explains the reaction, the jealousy of some and the foolish arguments of others who would believe in that 'betterness' if they had won, so have to turn to explanations beyond their own team's performance to explain their why they are not. L'equipe's headline today is Rule Britannia and is about how well we did but the comments section still has people making comments about Hindes and now Tom Daley asking to re-jump because of the flashlights. PaddockLad 17643
Do they have anthing like the lottery funding that team GB enjoyed on the continent?...I remember Jake Humphrey pointing out Chris Hoy putting special electric "warmers" on his gignatic calves to keep them warm between races, and saying these are the small details that help us succeeed. Is it lack of funding that is holding Fritz and Jean Claude back?....
