Spain?

Recommended Posts

Are we going to see a drastic slide in the quality of the Spanish teams due to the current economic climate. In january a law was passed to increase the tax for footballer from 24% to 56%. As the clubs negotiate salaries Net of tax this is going to cause a huge financial burdon for them.

Thoughts?

Looking at the big two I can see it being more of a problem for Real Madrid than Barcelona

the core of their team adore the club and won't leave it, can't say the same for madrid

It won't hurt Spanish football too badly I would say. If the same happened in English football there would be a much greater impact simply because of the volume of foreign players in the league for money. Spain has so much national depth at the moment and that looks as though it will continue for years to come with them dominating the world stage in youth completion as well.

the thing is, in Spain, clubs pick up the tax bill for their footballers. so Messi's salary is actually 275,000 p/w after tax, and he's only taxed 24% as he's technically a non-EU worker (the tax rate is much higher for a Spanish or an EU player). therefore the salary costs incurred on Barcelona and Real Madrid are going to quite literally going double over the next year if this legislation doesn't change. it will change things I think.
