A seven-year-old boy has died after falling from a traction engine at Beamish Museum in County Durham.

North East Ambulance Service confirmed the boy died at the scene.

It is understood the boy was riding on a traction engine, when he fell and was hit by the trailer the engine was towing.

The incident was reported just before 3pm this afternoon. The whole site was evacuated and remains closed.

A police spokesman said: "There appears to have been a tragic accident at the museum, where a child has been knocked over.

"The emergency services including ambulance and police are at the scene and are investigating."

The Great North Air Ambulance Service was dispatched, but the crew was stood down before they reached Beamish.

The museum is yet to comment on the incident.

Just seen it on the news there. Absolutely awful - take the bairn out for a sunny day at Beamish and come home without him. Dad taken to hospital suffering from shock apparently, no wonder.

I just can't imagine what it must be like for the parents. Don't want to imagine. Awful. :(
