I don't get your point tbh. Chelsea have always qualified for the CL in recent years, so they're obviously rivals to other clubs looking to do so, i.e. Spurs in this case. The fact Chelsea sacked their manager when it looked like they wouldn't qualify only reinforces that. Liverpool would have to be classed as Spurs' rivals too. Obviously Arsenal are but they're an anomaly, surely (arguably the exception that proves the rule re: spending). You can't seriously consider us to be the proper rivals to teams competing for CL spots until we've been knocking on the door for a few seasons at least. Without working it out I'd say there isn't many more clubs that spent more net than Tottenham under Redknapp than there was spending bigger than Robson for us at time. In relative terms Robson probably had more money. It's a bit like trying to argue Dalglish did it on a shoestring at Blackburn if you only going to look at the amounts and not put them into the context of what other clubs were spending at the time.
