KCG - are you adopted Scottish now then ??????? And what do you think will happen if they get full independence ?

Not Really I am proud to be English (well from the north east cockneys can fuck right off :-)) but I love living in Scotland. I think if Independence comes now (big if) nothing much will change to be honest. Except Scotland which is a nation in it's own right will have full democracy and self determinationism. At the last national election Scotland returned 1 Tory MP. And yet it is governed by the Tories. That can't be right.

Aye I didn't really mean it was a cunt's trick. ;h

It's a funny one. I'm pretty sure my parents have some funnyish views on homosexuality - nowt hateful or anything mind. Was talking about it recently with a lad at work and his dad is insistent that it's a lifestyle choice - this lad had a friend growing up, and he reckons even from like age 6 it was obvious that this lad was gay, but his dad won't shift even though he shares the opinion about this other kid.

You've got me thinking it could be a tactic going forward though.

When Leazes is being partuicularly destructive in football, start a General Chat topic on evil muslim gays protesting good, honest, British invasions. Dangle it like a carrot under his nose and lead him away from the football. When he gets a bit beyond the pale in there, start another football thread about Ashley outshining Shepherd in every way.

The lifestyle choice view is a funny one like. As if people would choose a life of persecution and discrimination. If anything, a lot of gays choose a straight life to make it easier on themselves publicly. There's no-one straight thinking "why should those gays enjoy all the bashings, I want some of that!"

The persecution thing makes CT's question interesting. Would be nice to just be able to say you'd let nature take its course, but I've no idea how much more difficult life would be - I'm sure school must be pretty shit at times. Be interesting to see what Meenzer and The Fish reckon.

If it was proved genetic, tested for and "curable" during pregnancy.......

What would you do?

I'd definitely support that. Anything that could remove homophobia before birth would be a good thing.

I think it's a very interesting question.

I think the vast majority of "straight" couples would choose the "cure".

Also putting it down purely to genetics plays into the hands of the far right "find a cure" brigade.

Maybe this is why the likes of tatchell disagree with it being genetic.

Maybe we could cure black too.

It has to be genetic or there would be no gay people in Yorkshire. ;)

They will in the future. YOu'll be able to chose exactly how your children look. Absolutely sure of that.

I'm not sure how Tatchell would know. I don't think your being gay makes you an expert on being gay, any more than being straight makes you an expert on being straight. Either way, being gay doesn't make you an expert on genetics. I agree with JawD though, in an ideal world most people want their kids to be straight. The main reasons for that would be because you wouldn't want them to go through all the inevitable hassle and confusion etc., etc. Life's hard enough anyway, especially when you're going through puberty. That doesn't mean you wouldn't love a bairn of yours if they turned out gay of course. If you don't support them through that you're not a very good parent imo.

There seems some resistence in the gay community to the genetic theory. Not really sure why.

another very good piece from brooker. i'm a big fan of his work.

i strongly agree that anyone who strongly objects to homosexuality in this day in age is almost certainly using their public display of digust as a defence mechanism in an attempt to supress their true feelings.

leazesmag is a closet bender basically.

I dont think for a minute he does but by taking the "choice" position he can argue against the its genetic / find a cure brigade.

Not that I like PT in any way shape or form. Think he's an odious creature (just for the record).

Thing is, if you 'choose' to be gay, it's because you fancy people of the same sex, so it doesn't work, does it?

I remember reading something that said it was like being left or right-handed in the sense that you aren't born that way but you already have had your path chosen (for want of a better phrase) very early in your development. I assume that's just another theory.

Exactly. Of course Id support my kids if either was gay. But as a parent I kind of have this (is it selfish?) vision of them getting a good education, good career, married and a couple of kids. Once that is in place I reckon I could die happy. Life isnt that straight forward though.
