Defenders from abroad, especially at his age, shouldn't be expected to take to the league like a duck to water. I think the club realise this and that they'll try and coach him into fulfilling his potential here and ease him in, rather than just give up on him.

I just don't think Pardew has that much faith in him and with the rumours about us still chasing that lad from PSV I can see Santon struggling to fit in, reading the forums people seem to think he will move to right back if Pieters comes in but I haven't seen anything to think Simpson isn't his preferred option there despite his patchy form.

I can see 2 fullbacks and a centre back coming in.

Think Santon looks great going forward but not sure about his defensive work yet. He's absolutely different class to Simpson as a footballer though. I'd like to see him have a run at right-back.

That's pretty much my opinion too, however what I want Pardew to do and what I think he will do don't match up.

If we sign Pieters but not a right back then Simpson will be his first choice going into the season and it will take an injury for Santon to get a chance.

Aye, makes total sense to let more of our squad leave when we're gonna have more games next season. The likes of Simpson, Williamson, Guthrie and Best we should keep

Doesn't matter if we have more games we can still only have 25 bods. If you look mate we have over 30 at the minute that's why in my opinion I would let a lot of average players go to free up some wages to get in better quality.

Santon can play on either side. I reckon if Simpson leaves then he will switch to the right with Pieters (if we sign him) going on the left. With that you then have Tavernier and Ferguson as backup on either side.

I would keep Fraser Forster like.

Exactly, we would be fucked if Krul got injured selling Forster and Hafper

I can't see him wanting to stay and be a back-up keeper for us when he can play as the number 1 for Celtic potentially player Champions League/Europa League football every year. Tbh I think that is why we signed Elliot.

I think it's going to take a lot of convincing to prove that Elliot is a Premier League quality keeper if Krul were to get injured. I don't see why we should be in a rush to get rid of Harper, he's always done well when called upon. How old is he now like? I think his main problem is he's been injured most of the season so he might feel it's time to call it a day. But he's been a very loyal Geordie servant to us and we should remember that.

You dont need to involve everyone in it, you can leave some under 21's(?) etc out of it, all you have to do is reach the 4 players homegrown by the club and then 4 more on top of it who have been homegrown in England then you can add whoever you want in

I wouldn't be surprised if Pardew let Santon go if he got a chance to get his money back.

That would definitely surprise me like. We need a squad, not a first XI. The kid's only young, in his first year in England, is clearly talented and Pardew's bleeding him in. If he can perform as consistently as he did against Man United, we're laughing but I think Pardew sees something in him.

Speculating on paper talk with us atm is ridiculous btw, they know fuck all. Trying to analyse Pardew's thought processes from it is even more futile.

So if there under 21 they don't count towards the 25 man squad but can still play?

Just read up on rules and yeah if there under 21 we can have as many as we like.

Simpson has been arguably one of our most consistent players of the season, and has played every single game in the PL. Also he is up there in the RB rankings for the season. So why get rid? Not on big money and seems like a good lad.

Guthrie has come on leaps and bounds and tbh has looked pretty good when called on. Again, not on massive wages and seems to be a good lad. We'll need these players next season when in Europe, so why get rid?

Makes no sense at all.

The club have already rightly said that they want a small squad but with more quality. It's not that we dont have the players, its just that you cant replace likes of Ba with Best/Lovenkrands or Tiote with Smith and so on.

Id say any player that comes in replaces someone on the fringes or reserve and is good enough for the first team. With that in mind I'd get rid of the following :

Lovenkrands

Smith - Contract expires anyway so he is as good as gone

Best

Ranger

Xisco - Contract until 2013 so likely to be retained until then and leave for nowt

I would like to keep Guthrie, Shola, Harper etc. I found bringing in Elliot and odd one unless someone was on their way out. Forster is contracted until 2014 so seems the obvious choice to go. Or Harper who is next season.

Id keep Williamson as a reserve.

I'd bring in:

1 x Centre Half - Colo and Taylor after that we have significant drop off in quality

1 x Full back - Still no real LB and Simpson needs someone to push him. Santon needs more time imo.

1 x Forward - If we let those above go, that gives us Ba, Cisse and Shola. We need at least one more quality forward esp with the ACN.

That would reduce the squad by 2 not including any kids on their way out (a few are at the end of their contract but we should be looking for new kids on top of the above to replace)

If we want to increase cover due to Europe then I think on top of the above we could even bring in two of each position above. This assuming we retain Gosling and Guthrie who back up Tiote and Cabaye.

Personally I don't think Simpson is a quality RB. He offers nothing going forward and gets himself into trouble at times. He wont sign a new deal and we could get a couple million for him, RB rankings and stats mean nothing, they just mean he has had more to do. As I've said before I'd rather see Santon on that side with Tavernier as a reserve option.

Where's this stuff about his knob come from?

you know in the danish national team his unoffical nickname is actually peter pik (peter cock), and they say there's is really no question who has the biggest in the pl if not the whole football world. are we talking mandingo x2 or what?...

If someone asked me who was longest in the shower about my mates I'd probably think they were on about duration too, I wouldn't instantly start thinking about their cocks, you bunch of puffs.

Pfft, You're not a man until you've watched a well-endowed chap do windmills in the shower.

There was a guy on the ice hockey team who we all called Dad Cock, I won't bother explaining why as it's sufficiently obvious yet worrying.

We're not going to see massive activity in every window and in terms of squad personnel, I think we're going to be losing Smith, Lovenkrands and Guthrie. Maybe Best (but he's just had a kid up here too apparently) but I think, without a striker coming in, you need to keep Best about. He's not the greatest but has scored this season when we've needed him to (When Ba either wasn't performing or wasn't here) and will always put a good shift in.

You've got to remember losing Smith frees up an extra 60k a week as well which may incentivise the board to give Simpson that bit extra wedge he's after for a couple of years extra with the intention of slowly improving that position. We lose Simpson and we're down to whoever comes in (if a RB is signed; a link with Debuchy means very little), Ryan Taylor (who is arguably better at LB) and Perch. I haven't seen Tavernier so can't comment on his readiness at all but I'd rather have Simpson around in case of trouble.

Also, we're juggling (potentially) 3 cups alongside a league campaign; a league campaign in which the expectation should be European football again iyam. We can afford to lose a player like Guthrie who, while technically competent, is expendable in the grand scheme of central midfielders with Abeid, Vuckic and Gosling waiting in the wings. If you factor in the 4-3-3, you also have Jonas who has proven to be a good option and Perch who, albeit given a very basic job, has performed.

The next two windows, IMO, should have a very clear focus on strengthening the depth available at the back. Bringing along the likes of Santon alongside quality like Coloccini and eventually relegating the likes of Taylor and Perch to bit-part roles in the midfield or away from the club all together (I like Ryan Taylor as a character but if we're serious about building a good side, he should be away in the next 2 seasons). Danny Simpson needs to at least stay for the foreseeable future IMO as, from this point on, I don't think we're going to be a side who radically alters the make-up of the squad from window to window (though last summer had big characters leave so it was a neccessity, I don't think we'll see that in the summer).

We could have another whole debate about selling players like Simpson, Ryan Taylor, Best etc and how you lose their presence with regards to morale and team bonding. More than talent has went into the make-up of our season IYAM and Simpson, who seems to be well-liked and popular amongst the players, can be a big loss in more ways than one when they leave.
