Newcastle plotting move for Sigurdsson to thwart Swansea's hopes of permanent deal

Brock will know what he is like better than any of us, but I've been really impressed with him whenever I've watched him play. Plus it's always handy to have another goal threat from midfield.

I also think if we're looking to continue playing 4-3-3 he'd fit in perfectly alongside Cabaye and Tiote.

Newcastle United are attempting to hijack Swansea City’s move for Hoffenheim midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Sportsmail understands that Newcastle manager Alan Pardew was so impressed with Swansea’s loan star during United’s 2-0 win in south Wales earlier this month that he has since made a number of enquiries to his German employers.

Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins reiterated his desire to sign the 22-year-old on a permanent basis, but a deal, which is likely to be valued in the region of £8million in light of his impact since arriving in January, would smash the £3.5m club record they set in signing Danny Graham last summer.

‘We've got to hope that his relationship now with the club, with the players and with Brendan (Rodgers, the Swansea manager) has helped him in the Premier League, and he sees us as a great option next season if he's allowed to leave his club in Germany,’ Jenkins told the BBC.

‘No doubt there's going to be a bit of a battle on our hands to secure his services for next season.’

The scale of Swansea’s bid is still being considered by Jenkins, but he may be powerless to compete with Newcastle when it comes to salary negotiations.

Swansea’s top earners pocket in the region of £25,000 each week, which is dwarfed by the resources at Pardew’s disposal and those at Tottenham and West Ham, who are also believed to be interested in the Iceland international.

Sigurdsson scored his seventh goal in 13 Barclays Premier League starts in Swansea’s 3-0 win over Blackburn on Saturday.

Hoffenheim’s new boss Markus Babbel has noted Sigurdsson’s form and wants him to return and see out the remaining two years of his contract, but the midfielder is keen to stay in the Premier League.

Sigurdsson said: ‘I love English football so I would love to stay. This is a fantastic team and it is fantastic to play football in this league. Hopefully I can stay in the Premier League.’

Would be canny if he's available, thought HSV said they want him back?

if swanseas loan has a fee at the end attached we could nip in with a slightly higher offer which it'd only make sense for them to accept

He'd fallen out with the then manager when he went to Swansea so it wouldn't surprise me

One of the best players I've seen in a Reading shirt. Would be an absolutely belting signing for us.

He's wasted at a nothing club like Swansea, the guy deserves a shot at a bigger club. His set pieces are superb and that's an area that's let us down this season.

I don't buy it. The policy seems to be buy players that we've done our homework on. This would smack of opportunistic gambling?

He's looked good in highlights and was Swansea's best player on Good Friday but I still wasn't that impressed with him on the day......if this is true does it mean Guthrie's off to Villa? In view of his dead ball ability I assume that would be good business on paper.

There's nothing to say that he hasn't been on our radar since his time in Germany. There's also nothing to say that this article isn't entirely fabricated.

I know he is more attacking but could possibly sit inbetween Tiote and Cabaye

He's versatile enough to play across the midfield but I'd play him higher than Cabaye as at his best he scores for fun. Used to do very well playing just behind the main striker under McDermott so i'd say that's where he'd be most effective for us. He'd be an alternative to Ba in that respect imo but would definitely fill in at CM when the inevitable injuries hit us as they always do.

Guthrie and Smith leaving would free up an awful lot in wages to get Siggy in.

His free kicks are Juninho-like.

Be interesting to see how we fare in a head to head scrap for a player that another Prem side wants.

We've flown under the radar and got people in with seemingly no one else showing an interest of late, but this should give us some idea of how our new structure sits in comparison to other clubs. Even if it is "only" Swansea - maybe it's more interesting that it is only them.
