Christmas Tree 4827
I don't think anyone's arguing otherwise, people have just stated that they would prefer Jonas. That's fair enough then. Just seems strange that on the one hand most are saying they would prefer to start Jonas or Vuckic etc yet you also agree with me that he will start the remaining games and do very well? I think this boils down to a chasm of opinion where I see him as a starter in a 433 going forward and "others" seem happy for him to be moved on in the summer, possibly being replaced by so far unproven kids. Tom 14013
I don't think people have really expressed glee at him being moved on - more an acceptance of the situation. He doesn't quite make the grade for the first team - he's in the same age bracket as Tiote & Cabaye but he is a class below. He's been offered a decent deal - presumably as a squad player - which suits his ability, he's refused it. I think Jonas overall works a lot harder & overall he's a better footballer, he's also benefitting from adding a bit of bulk. Guthrie looks good at times but can also go missing or sometimes make some bizzare decisions, but one of your biggest criticisms of Jonas is his lack of assists, Guthrie is in the same boat, for creativity he'll be relying on somebody else. When Vuckic & Abeid were brought up it was more as players who would be in the same group as Guthrie challenging for that position - obviously Guthrie is top of the pack but he shouldn't be getting a position as a gratuit in anyones eyes. I think people like Guthrie but I think he's in the Danny Simpson camp of not being good enough to be missed. I doubt he'll start ahead ahead of Jonas if we chose the 4-3-3 for the next game but he'll probably do okay in the last few games he plays. However people wont be surprised or dissapointed if he chooses to go to Villa, at his age it's an important contract for him.

I think if it's 4-3-3, Jonas will be in the middle. If not, it'll be Cabaye-Tiote. Guthrie's off.
ChezGiven 0
Few games this season Guthrie has been better than Cabaye, classing him in the same bracket as Simpson is unfair as he actually has a decent football brain.

To be honest they're both in the Aaron Hughes bracket where, regardless of footballing ability or vision on the pitch it's that they both fall in that unusual bracket where we'd receive bugger all (realistically) for them and it would cost whatever we make selling them to get a replacement who is happy to sit on the bench... Hughes was moved on for naff all and we never really replaced him. He was a model pro who was at times the weakest player in the back line (in terms of talent) but I never had concerns if he took to the field. Same as Guthrie and Simpson, weakest in terms of talent, but I never wince when I see them on the team sheet. If we can get both of them to sign to a contract I wouldn't mind paying a little over the odds for their wages to keep them.

I don't recall anyone saying vuckic start ahead of Guthrie. Guthrie has done brilliantly this season but for me, when everyone's fit, he just misses out. Good first reserve option though. Brock Manson 0
I didn't understand the logic behind selling Hughes. He still gets the odd game for Fulham in the same Mr Dependable role. Came up through the academy as well. He was one of those players you'd see warming up and just not recognise him at all. I did see him score against Norwich at my first trip to SJP though! He was miles better than O'Brien, who inexplicably was a first team regular.

Favourite Hughes memories; his debut at Barcelona and me declaring that he was going to be a great player for us (after 1 game...), the link up with Solano for Bellamy's goal against Derby (I think). Good pro that we sold for no good reason what so ever. We all know who to blame for that one.

There's still 25p left of the Hughes money that's gone into the fat man's pocket. I've been saying it for years chum, but some just won't respond in a civil manner when I've only tried to have a reasoned debate with them. Shouldn't you, in your adopted role as the forum policeman see what I've been saying for years about the Grey Man and the financial whizz kid? Fuck off you fuck. Well done. rogerbarton 24
Quite right Fish, the mystery of why we would possibly have sold Hughes isn't really a mystery at all when you remember who sold him.
