Kevin S. Assilleekunt 1
Unless you're a vocalist or an expert on singing, the majority opinion rules on the aesthetics of voice. I dont know how people can claim she's a shit singer when her voice is judged to be beautiful by the majority and as we all know, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Her songwriting might not be up to much, the composition a bit boring etc but a good voice is a good voice. You dont get to argue against that tbf. You shouldn't use the majority rule when it comes to popular music; the majority you speak of have displayed throughout history that they will buy whatever is marketed to them, in vast numbers. Sales is mostly a triumph of marketing. Paddock Lad gave a good summary. If you are a man, and you enjoy sitting around listening to Adele and Jessie J, then it is impossible that you have balls. I know this is contrary to your claims of having fathered a child, and being in possession of a huge schlong, but it's true. Lack of testosterone affects your ability to concentrate. Also, male pattern baldness is caused by a byproduct of testosterone, and therefore eunuchs never go bald. You are bald, and therefore it is not possible that you sit around listening to Adele. Perhaps your former intake of drugs has affected your brain function and this makes you think you like listening to birds from council estates warbling on about a builder they shagged who fucked off when he got her up the duff. Don't care that much about Adele but when Justin Beiber and one direction are stinking up the charts she can only be seen a breath of fresh air. Kevin S. Assilleekunt 1
I'd liken her more to belonging to part of a huge fart that started with Amy Winehouse, continued with Duffer, and now Adele is like a bit of follow through at the end. Park Life 71
I think a lot of her success is down to Amy Winehouse coming from nowhere to make millions for her record company. There's subsequently been a whole load of females being marketed to other females for their ability to do the old "ooo I've just been dumped boohoo" routine first patented for modern generations by Dido. She's ok, am not offended by her voice but I think that females with big voices have always been around since the start of popular music and bellowing away about lost love like a pre menstural elk is nothing new really, its just its difficult to make money out of music nowadays and the market for Adele and Amy Winehouse is still willing to buy CDs in huge numbers. I think that's why it seems every time you turn the radio on you hear some Doris or other weeping into a mic. And lets face it, as men, all that is really fuckin boring after a while. Anyone who wants to hear proper boohoo stuff should try Dusty Springfield or,my particular favourite, Shara Nelsons solo stuff. "Girlfriend in a coma, I know...I know it's serious.." ChezGiven 0
I disagree KSA, when it comes to aesthetics of pure voice it's a question of taste. No ones taste is better than someone else's (unless your an arrogant cunt) so the majority rules. When it comes to songwriting, lyrics etc then you know that mass marketing sells utter shite. However, Adele is the antithesis to current marketing trends so you can't really accuse her of having success on that basis. 19 was not a heavily promoted album but became a success because of the voice, it certainly wasn't because of her sex appeal which is how the rest of shit music is sold. Apols HF, didn't mean to accuse you of being an Adele fan.

Apols HF, didn't mean to accuse you of being an Adele fan. Interesting what you say about the marketing. You're oversimplifying to suggest that marketing is based only upon sex appeal these days. Certainly it's the case for someone like Rihanna. She started with a 'nice sexy island girl' image--probably the type of lass who doesn't take it up the shitter every night, once a month at most--then when the sales started to drop, Jay Z transformed her into a hardcore mega-slut with an insatiable sexual appetite, who definitely takes it in every oriphis in her body all day and asks you to beat her and defecate on her whilst doing so. Her sales exploded, it's been a very successful marketing scheme. But at what cost CG? They took this girl--and she was a girl then--out of school in her teens and gave her millions, and now she makes terrible decisions like choosing to go back to a bloke who beat and bit her to a bloody pulp. But that's another story. Thing is, whilst the dads and the young girls from council estates love Rihanna and like to dress like her and simulate masturbation constantly as she does (the young girls, not the dads--at least not all of them), there is another segment of the record buying public who are angry at this: boring women with disposable income. They think that hip hop and rap (which caters to another segment of the record buying public: the blacks) and overtly sexual popstars demean women and this makes them angry. Therefore there is a huge gap in the market for fat ugly chicks who can sing. This is where Adele comes in. She woddles onto stage and warbles on about some builder she shagged who left her but now she's a strong independent woman so she doesn't even care, and these boring women with disposable income go apeshit and buy the records immediately. 'Ohh, this music really speaks to me', they think, with their tiny brains. So in actual fact, being a fat ugly chick now is just as marketable as being a sultry sex-pot like Rihanna. That's why Adele has major label backing, and produces high-end music videos and gets Brit awards and so on. Someone like Winehouse was more interesting on a musical level because she obviously had an eclectic taste in music and you can hear the influence of that on some of her records--not that she was so great, just less boring and more talented than the rest of the current lot. With Adele, take her big hit, 'Someone Like You'. It's a simple chord progression with a bare and dull arrangement. You can see why it sold well, because it's very simple and thick bastards can follow the tune. Would you say Madonna and Celine Dion have great voices? They are two of the biggest selling female acts of all time. To me, Celine Dion is akin to an agent of the devil. Madonna, I liked the one where she shags the black jesus. Cher has sold 100 million records, she sounds like a fucking robot. It's a nice trick, but I don't care for it. Spice Girls 75 million, fucking hell. Great voices of their generation? Kevin S. Assilleekunt 1
Anyway, I just listened to her cover of Dylan's Make you Feel My Love and I think she has a good voice. But you can tell she's never read a book and her life experience consists of shagging builders and watching corrie with a tray full of curry, and that stuff counts. You want someone interesting, being fat doesn't automatically mean you have character. Maybe you just like chips.

manc-mag 1
It requires no great leap to visualise KSA walking out of 16 year old Stevie Wonder's 1966 Top of the Pops debut performance of 'Up Tight' in protest at his 'lack of bookishness' and limited life experience. Well 50 years on and Stevie wonder is collabortaing with with the likes of Pixie Lott, while KSA languishes at IKEA Warrington, listening to piped muzak and complaints about defective BORGSJÖ book cases. So perhaps he'll keep his fucking mouth shut the next time he sees Adele tucking into a second plate of KÖTTBULLAR meatballs in the competitively priced store canteen. Ayatollah Hermione 13873
Uptight is a better vocal performance and a stronger song though. Life experience is a dodgy point because The Ramones' life experience seemed to be drinking and fighting and they were brilliant. My main sticking point with Adele is dodgy tunes and annoying voice. I quit IKEA over 6 months ago, now I drive a van around for money. To liken my criticism of Adele for her dull songwriting to criticism of Stevie Wonder is the type of scrofulous bile we have all come to expect from the grey man, with his grey little mind. If YOU knew anything about ME, you'd know I am an admirer of the musical stylings and general character of the late James Brown. His lyrics sounded like safari animals on heat engaging in gang rape (the lyrics for King Heroin are very good though), but he used his voice almost as a percussive instrument at times, and his music was actually fucking interesting. He put together bands with an incredible level of musicianship and they played hard and they played with their hearts and their balls. You don't listen to James Brown for the poetry of his lyrics, you listen to his music because the music itself is exciting). Similarly Stevie Wonder is a brilliant musician who has produced some great melodies and the bands he puts together have serious chops, the music itself is engaging (he's also put out some shite, I'll let him off collaborating with Blue, he is blind after all--it may have been an elaborate trick). He doesn't sit there plonking out a simple chord progression on a piano and warbling out a tedious, predictable lyric with a dull melody, so the comparison to Adele is NULL and VOID, just like your grey little brain. I've been listening to Bob Dylan's earliest albums recently, because I'd never gone through them before. Some of the playing is very crude, so if he was just whining on about shagging a builder it would be unlistenable. Fortunately, Zimmerman actually read some BOOKS (take the hint fatty), and he grew up in a period when every fucker wasn't fixed to some cunt of a gadget that drains their attention spans and sense of perspective to that of a gnat. You can hear a lot of Woody Guthrie on those early albums. Dylan expressed himself honestly, and he had literary muscle; his songs engage people because of those qualities. You can only write so many songs about shagging a builder, I think the most successful--and the most explicit--one was Bob the Builder (can he fix it?). It's been downhill since that one. SloopJohn 0
KSA is spot on tbh, as someone who has flirted with the music industry and knows people who work in it, the whole thing is fucking depressing. I know A&R girls at Majors who have never heard a Neil Young album and extremely well known musicians who can't tell the Beatles from the Monkeys
