Hit me today how bizarre this whole Europe business is.

The media, our manager, our players and us, all make a big deal of getting into Europe and then what do we all do.......

Treat it with the same disdain that Alex Ferguson has for the league cup.

"it will be great for the vuckik's, Fergusons, Albeids etc".

Really, what's the point of the first team busting a gut to get into Europe simply to play reserve football.

It's a tad daft really!

Finishing 2nd,3rd,4th,5th,6th is the new "winning things" has been for years.

It would be brilliant experience for all the promising players on our books.

Obviously I hope we don't go and do a Spurs or Stoke in the Cup (although fat lot of good that did for either of their seasons ultimately) but it could really bring along the likes of Vukic.

Unlike you to complain about Fergie getting potential starts. ;)

Not really, You use the squad at your disposal to dispose of the opposition. If we have to wade through "minnows" it's risky to play your stars. I'd rather field a team that I'm confident can win, without needlessly tiring the players who will be required for tougher opposition. It'll be great experience for the younger players, who can also stake their place for a 1st team spot if they consistently play well in a competitive tournament. Also, if we're in Europa and the Muslim lads are in the middle of Ramadan, it'd be wise to play the boys on the fringes of the first team as not only will they get their chance, but we won't knacker our 1st choice strikers for the beginning of the season.

I agree that once we get to a point when the team we field needs to be our best team we shouldn't keep playing the younger developing players, but there's no reason to risk your best assets from the off. It'd take one poor challenge on a poor pitch and we could leave Ben Arfa for the season...

hum but you never know all we can do is give it our best shot

This season we've proved that we can beat anyone when the team are on form ie Manure, Liverpool. I would think we could beat the likes of Bilbao, sporting etc

Seen in the paper today even if we get sixth and Chelsea win the Champs League we wont get Europe

I've underlined the important bit.

Papers wrong.

All that will happen is that 4th place will swap competitions with Chelsea.

The only way we would finish 6th and avoid Europe would be if Everton overtook both us and Chelsea, with Chelsea in 7th (And winning the Champions League). It's so improbable it's not even worth considering. A win today for us makes it impossible.

Aye the FA have confirmed that 6th get Europe.

Yup, fourth place gets awarded an additional EL spot.

Not going to lie - and I know it'll be extremely difficult - but I really want us to go for third.

And why not? It's within reach but so much depends on what the other three clubs do in their remaining games (remember that Arsenal have played one more than us and Spurs... will be very interesting to see what happens today against Chelsea and I'm not sure what result I'd favour most).

On the flipside - finishing sixth and getting into the EL would represent a successful season for me. Anything on top would merely be a bonus, albeit a huge one. I'd hate to lose out on the CL because of Chelsea winning it, or missing out on it because of goal difference or something like that (at that point it would be a struggle to keep the 'what if' scenarios out of my head).
