Of all their delusions, their being a well liked fanbase is the biggest

Funniest thing is, they're not even hated. They're just not noticed. Other than STID where they were an absolute laughing stock, but they lack the self awareness to see this.

Are we liked or hated? Genuinely don't know and don't care. We're definitely noticed though.

Anyone have a clue what Brian is babbling on about here? What's this famous Man City match he's talking about? I'm guessing it was at least a decade ago. I don't remember it. Maybe if I did, I'd love the MLF's too?

The most pathetic part of that entire thing is "Other fans love us because..." The complete obsession with the need for external validation is beyond cringeworthy. I've not seen any 'group' do this in quite the way mackems do, both within football and outside of it. Or maybe it's just RTG, but either way it's extreme "pick me" energy, as the Zoomers would say.

The reason they are loved is their humbleness. It’s legendary. Here it is honoured in music:

Years ago when I was a filthy student I was studying Human Geography, and one module was about social deprivation.
We read papers on the Brazilian favelas, South African and Jamaican shanty towns, but one particular paper u remember was on the effects of social deprivation on adolescent mental health and development.
I remember it because it was done in sunderland, the authors choosing there because of the short age gap between generations giving them multiple generations of adolescents to study

Anyway, I found the paper online, the funniest parts are in the conclusions, specifically on page 450 and 477, which directly answer your questions as to why they do this en masse

A most elegant sociological theory you are proposing there Dr Monkey's Fist. Nay, nay I say, this transcends theory and we can now consider it to be a law. The law of the fans of massive lads.

I can say with some confidence that "Other fans" don't have a strong opinion about Sunderland AFC or the MLFs that support it.

Just like "Other fans" wouldn't have a strong opinion about Portsmouth.

Just taking a break and watched a Keith Downie report on SSN on them and he was really positive about them. RTG will explode with the mental gymnastics.

Aparrently their main man is some cunt on loan front Bournemouth (Mepham) - hopefully they recall him in January.

Don't they usually sell their best attacking player in the January window?

Whoever it is, they’ll be absolutely world  class. Until they leave and can’t get a start for someone like Ipswich

He was born in Hexham iirc. Grew up

all over shop as his dad was in the armed forces. NX is a bit shit like. Not that I’ve been in ages. But it’s obviously the worst venue in the country because he’ll have been to every venue in the country and not just because it’s in Newcastle.

Pretty bog standard medium sized venue isn't it?

The Arena is shit, hope at some stage they build the new one, although that's in county Durham (Sunderland) unfortunately.

Yeah it’s just a bit of a dump iirc. Typical converted bingo hall where they haven’t done a lot. Think it was originally a cinema

Nothing wrong with a dump though. I remember going to the Hammersmith Apollo 15 years ago to see the Specials. The floors were so sticky my shoes kept coming off.

I miss gigs full stop. :(

It's not even restricted to football fans. Here's a typical thread about how great the Empire theatre is, apparently people come from miles around to visit it and it is much better than Newcastle's Theatre Royal. (They have threads like this time to time, like they have a bigger swimming pool. Also they bring up them owning the airport thing a lot more than any NUFC fan I can tell). Why aye!

I think Shandy Drinker has been at something a bit stronger than shandy judging by his spelling.
