(Probably a bit of both. I felt a lot more safe at Roker park than I did at Ayresome park). mind you, I'd have to concede jimmy hill's statue quakes in its bronze shoes every time the mackem's stone island crew arrives in town.

strawb 4270
As a boro lad, away fans were running a gauntlet at Ayresome Park like. It’s a generally pretty rough part of town, and was full of back alleys. Housing estate now if you’re interested

NJS 4389
My first visit to Roker Park was Easter Saturday 1980 when poison dwarf Cummins scored. I remember there were 76 arrests and the copper in charge described it as a "quiet" derby :). I do agree it was pretty easy compared to other places - I think the use of football special trains with strict escorts made it manageable from a policing pov. I'd add some of the Midlands places like Derby and Leicester to BD's list as always being 5 minutes from being dodgy as fuck.

strawb 4270
Like a lot of fans I hate the development of out of town stadiums that are on shopping centres (MKdons) but the old stadiums in the middle of hard core terrace streets were proper dangerous when I look back at it.
Rosco 759
Went to Portsmouth in 83/84 and we were pelted with golf balls...Man City all sorts was being chucked over only good thing about Maine Road back then was beer was sold in the away section🍺...Middlesbrough was a bit dicey after the game dodging down back streets to get back to station as well as almost getting crushed when we scored

Gemmill 44988
Papa New Guinea. I've heard Papa John is a big fan too. How the FUCK would anyone know if they're massive in China and Papua New Guinea. Also sympathy at their pathetic plight does not equal support.

Alex 35112
I fucking love how they regale themselves with completely made up stories about, well, just about everything to do with their support. Their support is good, in terms of its size, given the shit they’ve had to put up with but it’s definitely mostly local.
