The spin that Stuart Rayner is putting on it in the Chronicle is that in order to strengthen (which everyone agrees they need to do), they needed to sell someone and get reasonable money in.  Their only saleable assets are Defoe, Pickford, Kahzi and PVA (not sure why Borini wasn't included as for me he's less shit than most of their players).  Of those four, the first two would have severely damaged the team and morale and pretty much guaranteed relegation (certainly Defore) so the second two were the options and Kahzi being away at AFCON made his sale complicated and PVA basically put his hand up with a number of uninterested displays recently.  He thinks if they could use the money to sign another leftback and the players I mentioned above, they'd be in a better position.  I can't say I'm convinced of it myself.

I think they'll end up weaker at leftback and with a bunch of old players looking for a last payday that won't much improve their team.  It might just be enough to keep them up if they're lucky again but there's nothing in their future other than Short selling out to some mega rich Arab's or Chinese to be remotely positive about.

Think that's pretty accurate, I'd agree on Borini (unless he means make a profit on those players?). I think the issue is what you highlighted in that would it really improve them, there's no good just having bodies in the door if you are losing 'quality'. If they got Keane I still don't see them playing 2 up top, I don't think Gibson in anyway improves who they have in CM. Jagielka is probably only going to be a really short term fix to cover suspensions etc as I'm not all that convinced he's a great deal better than what they already have (at 34 anyway).

Keane has 16 goals in his last 65 PL appearances and is now 36. I really can't see him scoring too many.

 I stand corrected then. I had no idea he'd dropped off that much. As I say he'd really be back up to Defoe anyway, unless of course Moyes wanted to play two forwards that are closer to middle-age than their prime in a side that struggles to touch the ball.

Keane, has scored 83 in 125 in America.  You could say he'd found his form over there.  Of course you could also say the standard is dog shit over there!

I think Jagielka would be an improvement for them like but I think losing PVA will weaken them at lefback and the others will do next to nothing so I don't think they'll be putting themselves in any better a position.  They needed to either sell someone like Kahzi who isn't playing much or get mega money from someone.  And they really don't have that someone.

The MLS is total dogshit, he's up against defenders that make less than some League two players (iirc a CB that he played on the same team as was getting the league minimum which is around $50k a year or something). He was also in one of the better sides in the League, he'd be lucky to get 3 touches per game at the mackems.

I agree though as I think it's a massive ask to improve in this window with 14m. They've also lost their 2nd best goal scoring threat ().

I find this description particularly amusing when set against a backdrop of Steven Taylor not being able to cut it over there.

 Especially as Liam Ridgewell is probably the best defender in the league. How the fuck did Taylor not even manage to look okay. I think he scored an own goal or got sent off on his debut as well the fucking plank.

Scored an own goal then was subbed at 3-1 down and I think they then managed to get a draw. That was for the reserve team as well iirc. Meant to have just signed for Ipswich.

I was just going to say is he still available, surprised Moyes didn't get him on the phone.

Objectively, Sunderland's position is nigh impossible. They can't afford to splash the cash to buy survival, they haven't an underperforming core that a new manager could spur to safety, they don't have saleable assets to raise cash and they're rock bottom, so it's not like with a couple of unlikely results they can get a bit of a gap.

At the same time, they're so riddled with debt, they can't, in all good conscience, accept relegation and plan for a rebuild in the same way as someone like Burnley or Norwich could.

Normally you'd say relegation could be an opportunity to get rid of the mercenaries (as Villa and ourselves managed), a chance to consolidate and rebuild with a better vision of what they're after. Forget about other Premier League sides, which of their players would walk into a Championship Playoff team? Pickford, Defoe, Kone? Would they stick around? Defoe knows West Ham were keen this window, could Palace or their ilk take a punt in the summer? Pickford is a highly rated English goal keeper, I'd not be surprised to see top half teams give him opportunities that a Championship Sunderland just can't. Kone is on wearside against his will and would surely leap on the first outgoing flight should they go down.

After that, as has been said, they're a mix of has beens, should have beens and never will bes. Can they rely on the likes of Anichebe and Rodwell in the 2nd tier, in the same way we could rely on Shelvey and Lascelles?

I suppose Rodwell could come good in the second tier but Anichibie's only run of form in his carreer has been those 3 goals in 2 games for them this season.  I'd not expect much from him in any division.

The other players you mentioned would almost certainly fuck off.

That would leave them with the well past their best players, Borini (went back under duress so would most likely fuck off too), Kahzi (would fuck off too), Kirchoff (bye bye)  Love, McNair, Jones, Gooch, the ginger cunt and Cattermole.  I can't see much in that lot that would suggest getting near the play offs let alone top two.

That Kirchoff looks like a canny player but his injury record is pretty shocking so I imagine that will put teams off. Cattermole is the kind of player who would stay and probably stand out in the Championship. The spine of their team has an average age of about 35 though so I imagine most will retire, leaving them with some very poor players indeed. Sometimes that can be the making of players though; look at what a season in the Championship did for the likes of Enrique, Carroll and Coloccini. I mean, they've got nobody that good in their side but some of the players that have come into a madhouse might settle down next season and start playing. Though, I hope not

I still think they could see Defoe go now that van Aanholt has left because the quality of players around him just got a little worse and he knows if a replacement comes, it won't be enough to save them.  They're expecting a kicking at Spurs mid week and their game against Palace is a must win with less than a week to get any new player in.

Coloccini was a Argentine international who'd been at big clubs, Enrique had actually started to come into his own in the second half of the season before and Carroll was just a young kid.  They might have some kids who may be able to come through that we don't know about but I don't see much in their first team that you think might come good.

Allegedly he gets a free transfer if they go down. Makes sense to sit tight for 4 months then take his pick of clubs with a £1mil signing on fee

Aye, he's absolutely guaranteed a PL club as well off the back of what he has managed to do in appalling Sunderland sides. Palace, West Ham, Watford, and a few of the other bottom half teams will no doubt be trying to get him in on a free (if the clause is true).
