True enough.

Mind you given the current approach isn't bearing much fruit, would it be better for the long term future of Sunderland if they allowed Moyes to start with a clean slate in the Championship? He could get shot of players who do just enough to keep them up but haven't the ability or wherewithal to get them comfortably safe? He could get game time for some of their young players who're not good enough for the Premier League at the minute. Certainly not a risk he can take when they're having to fight tooth and nail for every point.

£10m for a quality but ageing Premier League striker won't go far on Premier League players, but in the Championship we've been able to sign a CB & a RB of genuine quality.

Only if the new owners intend investment. If they just go down as it stands, they'll get stuck there. The core group of players would probably do ok, but they lack squad depth and the resources to rectify this.

You're assuming Short will be able to sell them.

They make fuck all despite having comparatively huge attendances, their commercial income isn't anything to write home about and without the Premier League money coming in their already troubling debt will surely only increase? Short may struggle to find a buyer for that hot mess.

Sorry, my post was poorly worded. I meant that going down and getting a clean slate would only be a good thing if Short was able to sell them. If he can't and they go down as they are, the second sentence of my original post onwards applies.

West Ham are fucking desperate though - they can't go down, it'd be a disaster for their long term ambitions. Taking Defoe has the effect of giving them a boost and making Sunderland terminal. Ultimately they'll be paying Sunderland to go down so they don't have to.

5 of his 11 goals this season have been penalties. 6 scored from open play isn't exactly £20m material.

They won't have to offer £20m IMO. I think £10m would do it for Short. They just have to make it large enough that the small chance of staying up looks less attractive than having the money.

You do wonder whether West Ham have told that the player will try to push the deal through.

Quite possible.

All of this said though, aren't West Ham also trying for Hogan for £15m? Would they go for both?

That's assuming they have the luxury of turning down realistic offers.  If the rumors of Short turning his back on them and their focus to streamline is true then it could be whether they are Premiership or Championship next season isn't as much of an issue as ensuring the club as a business survives.   Their CEO talking about multiple transfer windows to restructure earlier in the season hinted at the latter in which case Defoe will go this window for around 10m which would see them lose 4m from that deal compared to risking 10m if he walks because of a relegation clause in the summer.

I don't consider apologising when I make a mistake to be a sign of weakness  I'm actually bemused that it is considered as such on here..!
