Gotta feel for the people losing their jobs, as it's hardly the admin assistant's fault the owner's consistently employed the wrong people, bought the wrong players and then sold then for buttons.

Why do clubs lay people off when they go down though? Which jobs are so heavily tied to the PL that they simply aren't needed afterwards?

Like has been said before its not really linked to relegation. Senior club management is probably panicking given their financial situation and pending relegation. They just want to be seen doing something. How much cost cutting would axing some admin staff achieve in the modern premier league club where a player sitting on the bench will be likely making more in a week than they will in a year? They're realizing they're screwed. Let the hapless arm flailing begin.

Entire paedophile cover-up department to go and ticket office will likely be less busy

I meant in cases not specific to Sunderland but aye, I can see those.

If it is just cost cutting as aimaad says, then it does seem all rather futile when you've got Jack Rodwell on £50k/week or whatever it is. One Jack Rodwell will be equivalent to what? 104 reasonably paid admin staff? Are they gonna lay off that many?

The only effective cost cutting that would go on in a financially struggling relegated club would be sale of the better players/high earners and acquisition of new ones on far more reasonable wages

Makes sense to cut costs everywhere. Didn't Ashley swap out all our light bulbs for more economic ones?

Sure you're only saving £20k a year on some poor Administrator's wage, but you'll also be looking to flog Rodwell, and Kone and the rest.

Aye, I'm guessing that Martin Bain has come in recently and is wanting to be seen to be doing something.

Something on twitter that caught the eye yesterday was the sheer volume of signings they've made, that they go on to sell/release at a loss. And so many they receive nothing for at all.

£32m lost on Alvarez, Fletcher and Johnson alone.

What's notable is the number that are bought for a few million quid, then released on a free within a season or two.

Streamlining workflows or improving economy across the board to make everything more efficient in the long term makes sense (including light bulbs I suppose ). And thats the category letting go of a few support staff at a football club should fall into. Remember reading somewhere that around 50% of club staff are part time anyway. You could get rid of all of them and the savings would pale in comparison to halving a single players wages over a year.

You're right in that executives like fussing about staff costs, even if its a fraction of overall operational costs. It creates headlines and makes it look like you're doing something about a problem thats usually beyond them by that stage.

What's incredible is that Bent, McClean and Mignolet are the only players in that list that they have made a profit on. Even then it wasn't a massive profit.

It's noticeable how much utter shite they've bought over the years.
