Monroe Transfer 0
Not been funny but this exactly where a lot of you miss the point. He can afford to take the risk. His target is not to get into the champions league but to once again finish in the top ten as we further stabilise and further develop the "whole business". (Particularly the youth). It makes no difference financially to Mike Ashley whether we finish 9th or 5th (in the great scheme of things). You don't achieve something ln life and then write it off as an over-achievement. We've not been asking for massive signings, huge names, 10s of millions being spent. Just 3 or 4 players to add quality and strength in depth in very specific positions. RB is the only position where most argue we could do with someone coming in as the new first choice player in that position. The rest of our best first 11 is good enough as is. Another CB would help as questions remain over the likes of Williamson if Colo/Taylor get injured again. Another striker is obviously very much needed - and I don't even think we need to reach as 'high' as the likes of Carroll (the players acrossthepond listed are more what I'm thinking) - as if Ba/Cisse get injured we might struggle with the likes of Sammy, Shola and perhaps Campbell as inadequate replacements. I get the impression the board think ambition is holding on to your best players. It is, but real ambition would be adding to what you've got and Anita, two teenagers and a player from Ligue 2 are not enough. Simply not enough to take us further and I think we'll really struggle to get fifth or even sixth this season if things stay as they are.
Monroe Transfer 0
Yup. Like I said earlier it doesn't make much sense. I won't lie, a couple of months ago I liked where we looked to be heading transfer-wise. No huge names, but good quality players at the right age, highly rated and seemed to offer value for money and the prices quoted. It became obvious over time that our interest in these players was concrete and I thought we'd complete deals for them in good time - Douglas being the only complicated one. Then as time went on I figured the club would move on to other targets as we left deals on the table for the likes of Debuchy in case Lille changed their mind or the player requested a transfer. As I said it looks very much like this is not the case, that the aforementioned deals on the table were the only ones on it and that the club are OK with just going with what we've got. It's bemusing. The players we've been linked to are not special cases in positions that aren't a worry. in fact - forget CBs getting injured again - what are we going to do if Simpson gets injured? aimaad22 4240
Agreed, especially about Debuchy. Disappointing when we aren't willing to spend a bit more than 6M on the guy considering that he's one of two or three players we need to complete a very capable team. Christmas Tree 4858
Dear me The team we had last year with one decent striker, our parisian magician injured, Ryan Taylor playing left back and our central defender missing for most of the season finished 5th. Add to this we slotted lots of new faces in throughout the year and they all had to get to know each other and different formations and we finished 5th. Marveaux was injured all season and we finished 5th So far we havent lost any of our stars, Ben Arfa is a year fitter, Marveaux is back, Steven Taylor is back, they are all more comfortable playing with each other and we have a very good looking first team addition in Anita. Doesnt quite warrant the doom and gloom / slash your wrists brigade ffs Perspective!!!!
Monroe Transfer 0
I see that Mirallas has only gone and scored twice on his debut (against Orient, admittedly, but still).

Kid Dynamite 7191
I cant help but think that deep down they wanted to sell one of our top players for £20M so that we could use the money to buy 2 more players for around £14M + wages all in. Reason we didnt buy is that no one came in for one. Sounds plausible. Probably kicking themselves were bought Anita if Tiote and Cabaye stay. £6.7mil is a canny wedge for a sub

Sounds like there could be about £700k difference between our valuations. Or about 3 months wages for Alan Smith. StellarStripes 0
That's the way I see it. Me too. Would have been a real show of intent had we went and got what we actually need. A CB, FB and a ST. Seems to me that MA is gambling again, keeping the same squad that finished 5th and see how we do until January.

luckyluke 2
Can we re-name this the nufc transfer INACTIVITY thread? Kid Dynamite 7191
Not sure why people are surprised. When was the last time Ashley didnt make a profit from transfers over the course of a season? 6mil for Anita, 7mil for Debuchy and 15mil for Carroll!? Was never gona happen unless we sold someone else for serious money. But bizarre that our 3 main signings in Anita, Bigi and Amalfitano all play in a similar position. The same position we have nailed down with Cabaye and Tiote. Either one if them is leaving or we expected one of them too and it hasnt happened

Park Life 71
i miss the times/windows where Parky told us to stay frosty and things would work out My energies are being sapped keeping NO calm. Think they WILL get a striker and a def if they get the deal they want...Pretty well stocked with stopgap midfielders. Carroll would be decent, but I'd rather go for a more tricky forward type who can hook up from deeper positions with the Dembee. Van Der Wiel has been a bit patchy but I rate him. StoneColdStephenIreland 74
Now is the time we should be looking to push on, not stand still. If we don't get Europe next season then there will be no doubt in my mind that we will lose some of our bigger players. Players want trophies, not to be part of a five year building period throughout the best part of their careers ffs!
Lake Bells tits 1
Ive said that previously and obviously Tecato has ridiculed my post as usual, but the fact is that when you finish 5th you have to push on or our best players will start looking elsewhere for challenges. Its an unusual and unexpected position to be in 2 years after promotion, but it happened and you have to react to it. Either you elevate your expectations to match that of the teams newfound ambitions and quality, or you take a step back and calm things down, but by doing so the best players will leave - nailed on. Going to be exciting to see how it pans out in either case

Lake Bells tits 1
Wrap your head around the concept of a player group where certain heavy hitters drag the team into 5th, only to be rewarded with a summer transfer window of buying absolutely fucking nobody despite promises of the opposite. When it comes to players its all about believing the team is going places. Otherwise whats the point in plying your trade there, fotballers are professional with career ambitions. They want to win things. Players didnt feel like they could at arsenal so they abandoned ship. Similar thing could easily happen here if the window slams shut with a 3 million net spend. Hardly an ambition club and lets be honest, there are a few absolute gems in our starting lineup who can play just about anywhere. Tooj 17
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/newcastle-united/9507274/Newcastle-manager-Alan-Pardew-is-content-with-his-squad-as-the-transfer-deadline-approaches.html “We’re not really trying to get players in,” said Pardew, whose side play Greek club Atromitos tonight following a 1-1 draw in Athens in the first leg of their Europa League qualifier. “I’m 100 per cent happy to go with what we’ve got. I think the squad can cope with Europe. “The young lads are going to get games this season. Ayatollah Hermione 14090
Ben Arfa didn't play too much last season, we have Marveaux playing more this year. TBH, the fact you're looking for pretty weak things to complain about suggests this is not quite a disaster. It's the same side that finished 5th, we're in Europe, first XI is still excellent, bolstered by a good player in Anita. What do you actually want? Does money spent = progress to you? Because QPR should put that to bed Not you, Jonny bbz Edited August 29, 2012 by Ayatollah Hermione
