Looks likely that he will come, very happy with it, supposed to be a very good player. Can also play full-back, even if its not his preferred position. We will have no trouble accomodating him through injuries and rotation.

Got a feeling we'll wrap him and another up in quick succession as we really up the ante given the new season is so close to starting for us.

Usual pre-match Thursday press conference at SJP, Pardew flanked by Anita and Debuchy/someone else.

Am willing to bet on it.

Oh fuck off you miserable tiresome bastard

Honestly, would you speak to anyone like that in a pub if they said something you disagreed with? Calm down, its words on a screen.

I wouldn't stay in a pub with some dour git sticking in trying to ruin owt good happening

Honestly, man!

I've had a few pints with PL in various bars in the Toon on a matchday and bumped into him at the odd away and I'm happy to say that he isn't a misery but he is fucking good craic.

As for Andrew, I've never ran around a different town centre playing a glorified game of Zombie 'tuggy' but I suppose that's not miserable either.

I'll stick to the pint with PL, though. ;)

I didn't see his POV that much on that one I'll admit. Maybe you're right on that front, could be sick of the praise for our owner and pointing out that to run it as a good business then be prepared to kiss some of your top players goodbye?

Pretty much it Davey. A few scales have fallen from my eyes in the last few months for various reasons. I'm willing to trust Ashley enough to see this policy he has through to its (hopefully) logical conclusion, which is a million miles away from where I was the day we sold Carroll to Liverpool. That will mean letting belting players go. I didnt see any point in welcoming the possible signing of Anita without pointing out a pretty obvious conclusion that we're stacked with midfielders. Theres been one way praise for Ashley (for his transfer market dealings anyway) in the last 18 months but he's shown he'll sell if the deal is right and with good reason. So those who have complimented him cant suddenly complain if he lets any of our better players go iyam.

We're not able,in terms of squad structure and potential playing time on the pitch, to carry 3 top class central midfielders at this stage of the "project" iyam, for that I think we need regular champions league football, which means more and better players, which all require funding. To gain an advantage over the other clubs who are currently out of the champions league spots and close the gap on those who are, we'll need a "Tiote" situation. We may keep him, and it looks like we'll keep Ba. Good. But tough tackling central midfiled players dont get you champions league spots (although they can stop you from getting beat which is almost as important) so for me we're able to let him go if the offer is right and from what I've seen of Anita he's as good. So I can't really see the problem with suggesting it as a possiblity.

If thats being unduly negative, its not really the end of the world. For me its a true insight into how things might go in the next few years. I could be completely wrong (nowt new there!) and Ashley will provide the funding for a side that regularly challenges for the top 4 but I cant see it, if he wants to do it he must let some of the better players go and re-invest the money.

Before he signs, he will no doubt have that talk about where he will play and what he can expect. Of he signs, I'd assume he's happy with what was put to him.

We're not really stacked with proven central midfielders though are we? A bad injury to either Tiote and Cabaye and we don't really have anybody to come in that has proven they can be regulars in a Premier League team at the top half of the table.

Quotes from Anita himself suggest he isnt going to be happy spending too much time onthe bench or at full back.

Tiote now 'injured' for Saturday too . . . . Its gona be a long 3 weeks!

Is he?

Aye, Guthrie was first back up and he's gone. Smiths off too. The squad looks much leaner than last season, and all the better for it

Agreed. But we got by with Guthrie and Perch last season...Amaltifano and Perch this season?...dont know, and if that is the case we may not move on much in terms of success. If we dont sell Tiote its in a lot of ways a massive step forward squad wise this season. Thing is are any of Anita,Tiote or Cabaye going to be happy with the bench with the odd Europa game thrown in? That for me is the crux of it. Chelsea and Man City can carry a top class bench, not sure if we can. Perfectly willing to be proved wrong on that, but Pardew will enter the pantheon of the gods of he can hold all that together and keep a happy changing room.

Maybe he'll play a midfeid 3 of Anita, Tiote and Cabaye. Gives Cabaye no defensive responsibilties, Anita can float between the two boxes, Tiote purely defensive.

They'll need Debuchy to get that to work properly iyam...or an equally good player who's able to provide the width and quality that Simpson/Perch/Taylor cant. Its tricky, we'll see. Then you've got Merveux,BenArfa,Guti,Obertan,Amanlifano,Sammi A and his promising brother all fighting over 1 place up front if we expect Cisse and Ba to cover two of the posistions. Some will be ok with it, others...hmm..its going to be a very interesting month.

Not wrong, would need top quality wingbacks for it to work and it'd squeeze Gutierrez/Marveaux out of the side too.

Intrigued to see what happens tbh, if we get Anita in, and whatever happens with further outgoings or incomings. Will soon be apparent what Pardew has in mind.

One thing I will say is that Anita has been a target for months now. It's not like the club have just spotted a good opportunity and immediately want to take it up. Nor has he been brought in as a quick replacement for anyone. They know what they're after and they know what their plans are. This to me is a good thing.

Well, Lille signed a fullback the other day so we'll soon see Debuchy either on strike or at Inter iyam. 3 weeks left of the window. We'll see.

I think you have to wonder where Anita will fit in to a first team 11 if he does sign. For me at the moment the logical place would be at left back, with a switch for Santon to the right. Simpson would then revert to being cover if he can't be offloaded.

There is talk of defensive midfield being Anita's preferred position but with Tiote filling that role admirably Anita would be second choice there. Whilst Tiote is away he could deputise there i suppose.

This to me could spell the end of our interest in Debuchy. I know he's a right back, but with Santon being predominantly right sided I think he'd do a better job defensively if switched - really only played left back because of Enrique's sale. We do, of course, still have goal-line clearance specialist Simpson, who although limited still gives his all for the cause when on the pitch.

Judging from comments from the player himself and what the Ajax fans are saying there's very little chance he'll be coming to play fullback.

If we stick with the same formation as we ended the season, that would suggest Jonas would be the one who's position would be under the biggest threat from Anita's arrival.

Given Ba's apparent reluctance to play on the left though you have to wonder whether sticking with that is likely. In which case are we back to a 4-4-2 but that either means we only have room for two central players or we play narrow and that raises questions about Ben Arfa's place.

It'll certainly be interesting to see how it works.

There's nothing to suggest that Anita is anything other than defensively minded - do you think it would be necessary to play both him and Tiote in a midfield three? Especially when Cabaye doesn't shy away from defensive responsibility. I don't see Ashley bankrolling a significant amount of money to bring a player in who isn't in the first team - so either his arrival spells the end of Tiote /PaddockLad or he'll be deployed in a fullback position. The alternate to those is a reshuffle of the entire team around him, which I would think makes very little sense after the successful season that we've had.

Having said that fullback and defensive mid is an odd-pairing of positions to specialise in. Given we don't know a lot about him maybe he fancies himself as a wide midfielder? If that were tha case his potential signing would make a lot more sense, particularly if we can somehow offload Obertan.

If he is here to add some depth then it'd be great, but something like that is so far not in Ashley modus operandi.
