Saw Tavernier twice this season, once for Carlisle, once for the Reserves. If that kid doesn't play for England I've got a 12 inch cock. Reminds me of Glen Johnson a lot.

We need to have a squad whose backups aren't neccesarily comprised of inexperienced kids or total unknowns, I do think we're best off getting a left back and shifting santon in at rb but we don't need to get rid of simpson to do that.

What happens when our new left back picks up a knock or suspension, or santon does? We have barely any defensive depth but were advocating a one in one out policy on it?

Johnsons gash though and should be at best third choice as England right back at the moment.

How does he remind you of him?

Simpson views himself as a GB right-back, his sour blame-face will never accept a benchwarmer-role - and for that reason alone any discussion about keeping him is pointless, either you support him as our first choice or we get rid.

He has the basic skills to function as a PL-player, but nothing stands out. We should look to upgrade.

He also runs like a baby who has just learned how to walk.

Couldn't disagree more. He's having a poor run in a poor team but he's a class player. He reminds me of Johnson because he's not just a right back, he's a footballer too who is more than happy to knock it about get forward and contribute. Some of the goals Johnson has scored in his career have been immense.

Aye but as a defender he's not good enough to be a top half player to me.

Is nice to have but the right backs job isn't to score goals.

Well the modern fullback role have developed to offer much more than only defending, and often the best offensive fullbacks are also a bit of a liability defensively - see Lahm and Baines.

That being said Johnson is particularily weak in that area, Ive seen him skinned a time to many to consider him "great".

The only right back I'd prefer to Johnson in the Premiership is Ivanovic when he plays there.

Real Madrid strongly linked with Johnson in the last few days, and I think he'd fit in with their football absolutely brilliantly. Would be a good move for everybody that imo.

Nobody's saying that, I just don't think Simpson would warm the bench, so we may as well get money for him whilst we can.

Plus don't forget Shhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyynnnnnnneeeeeeeeeeee.

I was on a couple of Wednesday forums when Tav was there and they didn't think he was that great a full back. They said he was a asmashing footballer though. Megson ended up playing him right mid and the fans thought he looked a lot more comfortable there. Pardew recalled him as he only sees him as a right back though.

He speaks highly of him, I've not seen him play yet though.

Regarding Simpson, he can be a bit cowardly at times, and his first touch can be fucking awful. Against WBA, Ben Arfa, Guthrie and Cabaye were knocking it about lovely, and it went back to Simpson and his first touch was so fucking sloppy.

As CT says, he's played every single game this season, causes no bother and clears a fair few off the line. Worth keeping hold of if possible(but improving on).

Tavernier hasn't been offered a contract for next season yet as far as I'm aware.

He looks the part from what little I've seen of him, he's strong and gets up and down the pitch well.

Im not even gonna bother arguing with you about simpson, you are clearly WUM`ing it up.

Guthrie has a part to play but he is hardly pivotal to our team. A typical "nice to have" player - a bit like benayoun albeit not as good.

Give over

Simpson is our only ever present all season and has cleared 6 or 7 balls off the line.

You are a mug if you think it's not worth hanging on to a player like that.

It's true that Pardew seems to rate him and he's made a few vital clearances but.......he seems a very average defender to me. I'd say his position is an obvious one for an upgrade imo, he'd be an asset as a squad player, whether he'd be happy with that is another story.....

**Steps Back**

In a nutshell.

The goal line clearances have been massive for us this season but thats where your full back is typically deployed (on corners at least). He's definitively a last ditch tackler though overall due to backing off etc. Your better defenders judge the intervention a lot earlier.

We've had a brilliant season out of him by his standards though and still a very good one by the average standard of the Prem. Ideally he's back up in any improved back four next season, but a CB is a bigger priority if it comes to push and shove.

Simpson isn't too bad to be honest, I think he would do well in most mid table and lower teams but unfortunately for him that isn't where we want to be and currently he's one of the weak links in the team that we need to upgrade on, I'm not sure if Santon is the man to do that as I would have thought Pardew would have moved him over already if that was his plan rather than putting him on the bench.

re: Santon - I think we all forget how long it took Enrique to bed in to English football - he was pretty poor for the first 6 months

Judge him on next season I reckon - I was impressed with him against West Brom

Danny Simpson is by far our weakest player.

He struggles with the ball at his feet.

He offers literally nothing going forward, often having a negative impact as moves break down due to a misplaced pass.

He has very little pace.

He has a tendency to dive into tackles when staying upright would be a better move.

He consistently backs off 3-4 yards further than he should when attempting to cut out crosses, meaning he rarely cuts any out at all.

He rarely marks his man in the box, preferring instead to stand on the line on the off chance that he'll be in the right place for a spectacular goal line clearance.

He has no awareness of where his team mates are, in terms of forming a defensive line. This has resulted in multiple offside trap failures (three goals conceded at Fulham this way, for instance)

The biggest problem is that he tries to avoid any sort of responsibility. If there is someone else to pass to, even if he's in a terrible position, he'll give the ball to him. If the danger man is free, he'll run past him and pick up the less dangerous man.

Getting a new, competent right back must be a priority for us.

He was shown up for the quality of defender that he is when we played Norwich away. There's no hiding when you're playing centre back.

Especially when you are a not a centre back

Aye, well put.

You can switch a CB to full back all day and you really shouldn't have any cause for concern if theyre half way competent, but switching the other way is only to be contemplated in the most desperate of circumstances. Full back is by far and away the most limited position on the park so CB represents a massive step up.

Didn't Simpson play at CB in the Championship a couple of times and look alright? I know there's the obvious gulf in class between strikers in the two divisions but Simpson's height was being exploited at Norwich which he really can't do anything about.

As for losing Simpson, I don't think you can underestimate the value having good characters about the training ground and on the pitch can have. Think back to selling the likes of Aaron Hughes and Steve Watson. Better players, yes but their replacements were shocking and didn't contribute anything of note to the ethic and make-up of the squad as a whole. Simpson definitely does, he seems to be a popular lad amongst our lot and has a dedication and workrate that you can't take lightly. You also have to counter in European football next year and the rotation that will inevitably come with it where a player like Simpson, flaws and all, is going to be an important body in an area lightly stocked.
