What was Churchill's quote, "Democracy is fine until you meet the average voter"? or somethng like that. He's not wrong. Your average Joe hasn't the insight, impartiality, objectivity nor vocabulary to properly make an informed decision about matters of state. 74% of people want capital punishment? No they don't, 74% of people find some crimes so appalling that they want the harshest possible punishment. I'd not be surprised if the people, in all their wisdom, would vote in torture for paedophiles if we still had capital punishment.

imo there should be two tiers of government, a voted in public government that is there to deal with the day-to-day issues and another tier whose purview is far-reaching policy. This tier to be made up of the greatest minds available; not politicians, but titans of business, scientists, artists, etc.

The people elected are so busy scrapping for morsels of power, petty point scoring and are so terrified of upsetting someone that not much governing actually takes place.

torture for paedo's ? I'd vote for it.

Not saying this swings things one way or the other in a democracy but youguv polled this at the weekend and found 79% of the population was in favour.

69% of Labour voters were in favour too.

Up to 74% want to bring back hanging.

Fortunately the tyranny of majority is not our way.

the Death penalty is quite justified for certain offences

In backward countries.

Millions of lazy bone-idle no-marks who'd rather watch Jeremy Kyle on their free 50inch screen while eating cocains and drinking binge they bought with their kiddies benefits. Filthy scroungers need to learn what life's all about, get a bit of national service down their necks.

...best people to decide on the applicability of the death penalty though. Decent working class folk who know right from wrong and no mistake.

do you have a point ?

That the general population knows fuck all and shouldn't have anything to do with the running of the country.

Who chooses these 'great minds'?

X-Factor style Saturday night phone vote?

Just imagining Fish giving his election victory speech wearing a cummerbund and blazer combo, forehead freshly waxed so it's gleaming.

I wouldn't vote for you, ftr.

My point exactly.

I don't think this country needs your pseudo-intellectual caste system, Dave.

I didn't think that post would need a smiley, but I'm now concerned that you think that I believe I'd be one of the intellectuals that I thnk should be running the long term policies of the country...

At least Dave's Marvellous Meritocracy has (for the time being) steered this thread away from the predictably depressing route it was headed down.

Unless you include fields of excellence that extend to Ian Hislop lookalikes, I'm not sure you're qualified to be a part of your geniuses tier.

Obviously you're being tongue-in-cheek in response to Leazes' jowl-swinging diatribes but the system you propose wouldn't work - hence why I wouldn't vote for it. ;)

Course it wouldn't work, I said as much in a previous post. It's just that the current system leaves me cold, phlegmatic even.

I'm sick of Larry Labour, so lets vote in Teddy Tory, oh look everything is pretty much the same but the worst off are a little worse off. and so on and so forth. With each politician striving so very hard not to offend anyone and to follow the country instead of leading it.

I agree with you that the current system is bollocks. Each regime is as bad as the next and it won't change anytime soon. Tory/Labour are two sides of a very smudged and shit-stained coin, but there is such a distinct drop off in terms of political parties that they keep getting voted back in once they've blustered their way through 5-10 etc year stints.

We mainly have Tony Blair to thank for the popularity political contest that the general elections have become - we're crying out for some fresh approach from the rich bastards who only represent the interests of all the other rich bastards.

IMO there should have been an election once Blair stepped down because Brown had already set us back years during his time as chancellor and shouldn't have been anywhere near candidacy for prime minister. Instead we're still reeling from New Labour's government that has allowed the Tories to come back and screw us up some more.
