Girl, 3, goes head to head with hungry Lion.

A pane of glass was the only thing that stopped a three-year-old girl from becoming lunch for a lion at a zoo in New Zealand.

Sofia Walker was looking at seven-year-old Malik the lion just as he was about to have his dinner.

The lion focused his unblinking gaze on the little girl as she pressed her face against the thick glass at Wellington Zoo and asked her parents: "What's he telling me?"

Her mother answered: "I think he's telling you to move away, Sofia. He wants to eat his food."

While her mother realised the potential gravity of the situation, Sofia was completely unfazed, pressing her face up against Malik.

Finally, the alpha male lion could contain himself no longer.

His nostrils flaring with anger, he stood on his hind quarters and swiped his paws furiously against the glass.

While other children moved swiftly back, Sofia stood her ground before calmly stepping back and moving on to another enclosure.

Real life Jason Bournes etc....

(from sky news)

An Iranian nuclear scientist who worked at one of the country's uranium enrichment facilities has been killed by a bomb that had been attached to his car.

Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan, 32, died after two unidentified men on a motorbike fastened a magnetic bomb to his vehicle outside a university in east Tehran.

Two passengers in the car were wounded and taken to hospital, reports added.

The dead scientist worked at Iran's uranium enrichment facility in Natanz, and officials were quick to blame Israel for the assassination.

"The responsibility of this explosion falls on the Zionist regime," said provincial governor Safar Bratloo.

"The method of this terrorist action is similar to previous actions that targeted Iran's nuclear scientists."

Vice president Mohammad Reza Rahimi also pointed the finger at "those who claim to be combatting terrorism" - a thinly-veiled accusation of American involvement.

"They should know that Iranian scientists are more determined than ever in striding towards Iran's progress," he said.

Mr Roshan is the fourth Iranian scientist to have been killed by a car bomb in the capital since early 2010.

The current head of Iran's atomic organisation, Fereydoun Abbasi, escaped another such incident in November 2010, when he managed to scramble out of his car with his wife just before the attached bomb exploded.

Those attacks were viewed by Iranian officials as assassination operations carried out by Israel's Mossad intelligence service, possibly with help from its US counterparts.

Sometimes forget that there are real life Jason Bournes etc out there doing this sort of thing.

Wonder if this was Chez's mate!

Internet addiction harms brain "like Cocaine"!

Internet addiction can be as damaging to teenagers' brains as alcohol and drugs, a study suggests.

Scientists say internet addiction disorder (IAD) is a recently recognised condition where individuals spend unhealthy amounts of time online.

Researchers have now discovered it disrupts nerve wiring in adolescent brains in a similar way to people exposed to cocaine and cannabis.

They believe it shows that being hooked on a behaviour can be just as physically damaging as addiction to drugs.

Denied access to their computers, people may experience distress and withdrawal symptoms including tremors, obsessive thoughts, and involuntary typing movements of the fingers.

Until now research on IAD has focused on psychological assessments rather than the impact on the body.

The new study involved scans on the brains of 17 internet-addicted adolescents and 16 non-addicted individuals in China.

In the IAD-diagnosed teenagers, the scientists, led by Dr Hao Lei from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, found evidence of disruption to "white matter" nerve fibres connecting vital parts of the brain involved in emotions, decision making, and self-control.

Previous studies have shown abnormal white matter structure in the brains of people who have had alcohol, cocaine and cannabis among other drugs.

The scientists suspect the damage is caused by disrupted myelin, the fatty insulating sheath that helps nerves work.

Dr Henrietta Bowden-Jones, consultant psychiatrist at Imperial College London, said the research was "groundbreaking".

"We are finally been told what clinicians suspected for some time now," she said.

Currently, internet addiction is officially classified as an "impulse control disorder" rather than a "genuine" addiction.

Further studies with larger numbers of subjects would be needed before it might be reclassified, said Dr Bowden-Jones.

Bit of Oceans 14 here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-16556547

Thieves in Manchester dug a 100ft (30m) underground tunnel to get to a cash machine.

The theft happened overnight on Monday 2 January at Blockbuster in Fallowfield Shopping Precinct, Levenshulme.

A similar plot was foiled in the same area in 2007, and police believe it may have been carried out by the same gang.

Thieves dug the tunnel directly under the cash machine and used machinery to cut through more than 15in (38cm) of concrete to steal the money.

Det Sgt Ian Shore from Longsight CID said: "In all my years of service, I've never seen anything as elaborate."

The tunnel started from a railway embankment at the rear of the shop, and went under a car park and beneath the foundations of the store.

The passageway was about 4ft (1.2m) tall and had been fitted with lighting and roof supports.

Police said the offenders also made their getaway back down the tunnel.

Officers believe the people responsible could have spent up to six months digging the passageway.

Det Sgt Shore said: "These people had obviously spent a long time plotting this crime and I doubt they would have been able to keep their plans secret for all that time, without telling others about their scheme.

"They must also have spent a lot of time in the area over the past few months, which people may have noticed."

In 2007, police sealed off the area near a Blockbuster store in Fallowfield Shopping Precinct after workmen uncovered a 40ft (12m) tunnel that seemed to be leading to it.

That tunnel had also been dug from a railway embankment but had been uncovered short of its target.

Police were unable to say if it was the same Blockbuster store that had been targeted, but said it was not the same tunnel that had been used this time.

Gold Silk Cape Spun By Spiders

16155675.jpg

A cape created from golden silk spun by more than a million spiders is being put on display in the UK.

The hand-woven garment is being shown at London's Victoria and Albert Museum alongside the Golden Spider Silk, a four-metre long piece of brocaded fabric.

It took more than four years to make the items from the silk of 1.2million female golden orb spiders, native to Madagascar.

The brilliant cape will go on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum

They have been made by Englishman Simon Peers, who lives in Madagascar, and American Nicholas Godley, and are the only large textiles in the world to have been made from spider silk.

Mr Peers said: "We were keen to show the spider silk textiles at the V&A, being the most appropriate place to premiere this work in Europe.

"The unique and historic costume and textile collections have been a constant source of inspiration over the years.

"As far as we know the V&A has never before shown anything made from spider silk, despite its diverse collections of art and decorative arts.

"So we are pleased and very proud to be adding a first to a museum with such a rich, long and illustrious history, and would like to think that we in turn can be an inspiration to others."

Spiders were collected every morning before silk is extracted from them by trained handlers.

They are not harmed in the process and were returned to the wild at the end of each day.

Bungling Armed Robber Shoots Himself In Foot

A bank robber in Brazil spent very little time on the run from police - because he shot himself in the foot during the break-in.

The incident was caught on a security camera during the bank job in a small town in the state of Parana.

The thief was guarding the door of the bank while the rest of the gang went inside.

CCTV caught him brandishing two guns at the entrance while the raid was carried out.

Everything seems to be going smoothly until he lowers his right arm and accidentally blasts himself in the foot.

The thief left the bank limping and was arrested on the same night when he went to hospital for treatment.

Police are still searching for the rest of the gang.

The robbery happened last week but the footage has now been released by police.

Etna erupts pretty frequently doesn't it? Obviously not that routine / unimportant if you live down the road like.

Just reminded me actually, I've been past Stromboli (on a ship) at night before. One of the most amazing and strangest things I've ever seen. Totally bizarre.

Shot Naked Man 'Was Chewing Victim's Face Off'

US police have fatally shot a naked man who was chewing on the face of another naked man in the middle of a busy road.

The two men were seen fighting each other on the MacArthur Causeway in Miami and witnesses flagged down a police officer, who urged the attacker to stop.

The aggressor is thought to have been trying to eat the man's face and gouge out his eyes.

The officer ordered the naked man to move away from his victim but he failed to do so and so he shot him, the Miami Herald reported.

Witnesses said the man continued the attack despite being wounded and that he was then shot several more times, leaving him dead.

One man told a local broadcaster he was riding his bike down the road when he saw the man tearing pieces of flesh from his victim with his mouth.

"I told him to get off," Larry Vega said WSVN-Fox 7, "and the guy just kept eating the other guy away."

Mr Vega said that when an officer approached the pair, the attacker "growled" and even kept chewing after he was shot.

Pictures show the pair lying prone under a motorway underpass in the Florida city.

The victim was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital Ryder Trauma Centre and was reported to be critically injured.

Further reports suggested he could have been homeless and lying down when he was attacked. Police sources told CBS Miami he was left with virtually no face.

Miami Police confirmed there had been an officer-related shooting but did not include any further details.

The police said the identities of the two men are not yet known.

The Miami Herald was asked to provide its video surveillance tapes because their offices are next to where the incident took place.

The shooting and investigation led to traffic chaos as crowds were trying to reach South Beach for the annual hip-hop festival.

Javier Ortiz, a spokesman for the Fraternal Order of Police in Miami, said that based on information he had received, the officer who fired the shots "is a hero and saved a life".

Sergeant Altarr Williams, from the Miami Police Homicide Unit, said a man did not need to be armed to pose a threat to people's lives.

"There are other ways to injure people. Some people know martial arts, others are very strong and can kill with their hands," he said.
