Guingamp striker Anthony Knockaert has claimed that Newcastle United are in talks with his agent.

The highly-rated 20-year-old has been linked with The Magpies for a number of months.

The French youth international, who can play as a striker or out wide, is rated very highly in his homeland, but he has revealed he could soon be the next Frenchman to make the move to Tyneside.

When asked about Newcastle's interest, he told FootMercato: "They are in touch with my agent.

"Now, I take care of my own work and nothing else.

"My agent does not put all that in my mind so I can continue to work in the best way.

"I do my job, many young people take it too seriously."

Flattered

He admits it is flattering to here of Newcastle's interest.

"Yes, sure it's flattering," he continued.

"But I will not give up until one day I am at the highest level. But now I work for the team."

Knockaert admits he would love to follow in the footsteps of former Guingamp stars such as Didier Drogba and Florent Malouda.

"I always look to such examples, it helps me move forward," he said.

Seems a little odd that we'd spend £2m-£3m on backup given how much (Cisse aside) we've been spending on first teamers in the last couple of years.

Personally I'd rather see us bring in someone younger who could possibly develop into a first choice player than someone who's only ever going to be backup.

That said I don't think we can risk another siutation where we're playing Simpson and Perch in the middle so I'm happy to see we're doing something about that.

If he's cheap enough, and it provides us with reasonable enough cover, then I really can't see a problem with it. Especially if he's quick, as we've struggled against fast strikers this season.

I think people automatically assume he's being bought as first choice, and are using it as a reason to moan for the sake of it.

The Watford fans seem to rate him, and they see him a lot more than the likes of we do.

I don't have much of a problem I just think it's odd that we're suddenly spending up to three million (a figure I've seen quoted) on a player who's only ever going to be seen as backup,

I have no idea on how good or otherwise the lad is and I'm only basing the him being only brought in as backup on what Pardew seems to be saying.

Also that seems to be a lot of money to spend on someone who we don't see as better than Williamson.

According to a lad on N-O with Watford connections, we've bid 700k, and they want £2 million for him. I can see us meeting them half way if that's the case.

Not keen on signing backups when Williamson and Saylor should be the backups. I'm not really interested in decent defenders looking good when they're plonked next to Colo. I want a good defender who will look great playing alongside Colo.

Taylor was one of our best players upto getting injured

It's an interesting problem, we apparently want a better defender but can't get the likes of Yanga-Mbiwa and Douglas who we've been linked with as their clubs are in the title race in the league's they play in, so we have to wait until the summer for one of those and get someone in now to help get us through.

What we can't do is go through until the summer without getting cover in, so getting someone in low cost that can boost numbers and hopefully be good enough to start for us would be a smart move.

I think the opinions of fans from the club you're buying from are a good indicator of how good the player is and I was surprised at how highly the Watford fans rate him, one said he's far superior to Williamson who they had before he moved to Portsmouth and another said he's up there with Matt Mills as one of the best centre backs in the league, kind of reminds me of how we rated Coloccini and Enrique last season but fans of other clubs who didn't see them every week didn't have a lot of time for them.

If we do qualify for Europe next season we're going to need depth anyway, so a 5th centre back wouldn't be the worst move either.

Daily Mail have a great record on our transfer stories.

Proof?

There's a difference between their 'Sportsmail Reporter' articles (couple of lines, no quotes) and more legit-looking articles where they've not kept the journo's name anonymous.

I'm not basing my disdain for it purely on NUFC-related news, for what it's worth.

I coudn't really be arsed trawling through, but I think they called Cabaye, Santon and one or two others when no other paper had even hinted at it.

They called the Tiote signing too.

I don't know how many times you and others need to be told this.

Mike Ashley has NO foresight, and no "plan" to build and aim for such heights. His only aim is to preserve premiership status and own a [supposedly] big football club to enhance his Sports Empire. The days of ambition disappeared 4 years ago when he bought the football club.

I understand that you all had got used to ambition, and expected it, but this is a choice, and is made by the owners of football clubs, it is NOT automatic and you were told this for a long time by myself and a few others many years ago.

if you don't believe me, because it's me telling you, then believe Kevin Keegan.

When exactly will the penny drop with you people ?

Had a quick Google, and surprise surprise, the source for the above is the Daily Fail and my arch-nemesis - 'Sportsmail Reporter'.

Can we ban anyone who gives any credence whatsoever to that awful publication and their daily made up rumours? Nothing personal, henda.

I have a feeling people are missing your point here teccers

Pavlyuchenko is a decent player but there's not much point in him swapping Spurs bench for ours, will probably rip Sunderland off like they've done with selling them squad players previously.

ah what do they know?

same as Swindon fans when they sold us Ben Tozer at the start of soopa Mikes "plan" ?

What did they say like?

I remember one or two saying he was shit actually Jonny, but I'm sure the likes of CT will back Graham Carr's genius and Mikes "plan" regardless of the overall signing record in the last few years and the numerous duds we have brought into the club.

He was playing better than he has ever played but I still think any centre back brought in should be an improvement on Taylor not a backup to him. He's not that great.

He also spends a lot of his time out injured.

it depends how much we're willing to spend this window. We're not going to spend major money on a defender this window after bringing in Cisse. Spend about £2m on a pacier CB then spend a fair amount on a top quality defender in the summer. Personally I'd like a young player (19-22) with a bit of potential.

5th most qualified for europe and the Champions League in 15 years, 5th highest average league position in 15 years, transforming the club from one that couldn't raise 1.2m quid into the 14th biggest revenues in football, from a club with one foot in the 3rd division into one of the biggest clubs in europe, signing the world record transfer player......justifies the transfer policy they employed, wouldn't you agree ?

PS. Shepherd never owned the club by the way. Just thought I'd point that out, in case you didn't know.
