Monroe Transfer 0
Vukcic looked out of his depth and I hope he is never started in an away match vs a top6-team again. At home vs shite teams - give the lad 20-30 minutes. Thats what we are giving Ben arfa now so.. Ridiculous comment. I think he means this season. Not forever, I'm sure he gets ready for the big teams in a few years. I should have explained that one a little further (still not in a great mood following that performance, sorry Salty). It's too early to write Vuckic off against top 6 sides - he wasn't that bad and he's still a teenager who had his second start. You ease youth players into it, which is something Pardew did not do last night. Playing at Anfield on a Friday evening is not the same as a mid-table club at home. You want your experienced players for that kind of match.
Happy Face 29
Can we stop counting ( backward and sideways) passes and start looking for quality instead? Vukcic looked out of his depth and I hope he is never started in an away match vs a top6-team again. At home vs shite teams - give the lad 20-30 minutes. Thats what we are giving Ben arfa now so.. possession holding backwards and sideways passes are a good thing, especially away from home. Especially with a lone target man who's not going to hold the ball up or latch on to every single defence splitting pass you seem to expect. Whos saying that not a good thing? It is certainly a good thing but its not the only metric to measure a player's ability by and regardless of that it borders on completely irrelevant when the amount of time you're measuring it over is 30 minutes. Not much in the context of a season. Wouldn't you agree? Considering Ben Arfa scored last week and looked the goods criticising him this week for a poor performance is just dumb. It seems like the people saying 'he's not the messiah we all expected' based on one poor performance are in fact those who thought he would be prior and that has changed because of last night for some reason. Talk about over reaction. considering obertan created goals against Bolton and wba it must be dumb to criticise his performance too...if you're being fair. Obertan performing well is the exception not the rule. So even though he is due his credit when it is warranted, it is often given with a sense of suprise rather than as a clear vindication of his qualities as a footballer. Similarly, Ben Arfa is criticised for the opposite reasons, I imagine, I'm not so quick to judge as some. I think that is fair. Unless. Are you seriously suggesting that Obertan man-for-man is a better footballer than Ben Arfa? Would Ben Arfa not be a better option on the wing? Ignoring stats and the like for just a moment, I find them meaningless for the most part, just from your impression of him as a footballer. Ben Arfa is blatantly more talented. Obertan blatantly puts more effort in....even bottling every 50/50 he's in range of. The question is which ofthem we can carry when. Neither will be one of our consistent performers or anywhere near the running for player of the season. As Overran is more more naturally a right winger, makes sense for him to play there when fit. toonotl 3116
If we have to carry one of them I'd rather we carry Ben Arfa, I think that must be clear by now, as he is more likely to win us games. I don't agree that Obertan puts in more effort though. I'd say it's about even, which for me cancels any reason to select Obertan, natural position be damned. Obertan is clearly a coward, the same can't be said of Ben Arfa. Each to their own though. Edited December 31, 2011 by toonotl
Monroe Transfer 0
What annoys me also is that the goals were avoidable. First goal less so - but I'm sure it could have been better defended. Second goal - very debatable whether it was a free-kick in the first place. Was it taken too quickly? Would Krul have saved it if Simpson hadn't stupidly gotten in his way? Third goal - was the really annoying one, and just summed our night and sloppy performance. Playing short passes near our goal, Simpson suddenly finds himself outnumbered and has no-one to pass to so instead of just clearing it he loses the ball and it eventually finds its way into our goal. Played into deep trouble by Tiote he hoofed it out for a throw in ?????????? (that's a clearance in my book) Tiote picked Gerard up from the throw (for a nonosecond) and then inexplicably just let him go.

I obviously meant that for the time being, Vukcic is not ready and should not have started in that formation, away from home, against liverpool in these circumstances. In a few years Im sure he will be more than ready, but that is no way to accustom a player to the PL. He should be brought on on a downhill run, wind in his back, team looking confident against suitable opposition. Just the circumstances thats all. That being said, I think he performed above expectations. Its just that I didnt expect much from such an inexperienced player.

After watching the replay, absolutely. Comfortable save that would have been, Simmo headed it down and past him. Clumsy but things like that happen, too bad it happened to simpson rather than say Colo, because my patience for the lad is already wearing thin. That being said, I doubt Colo would have managed such a howler.
Happy Face 29
So, on the list of people that can't play are vuckic, obertan, best, ameobi, smith, perch, Simpson, Ryan Taylor and maybe gutierez. Who's taking their places? Maybe some people should accept our best options in some cases have limited ability.

I saw the goal as it happened and didn't care for another look, so fair enough I guess if that's the case. By clearance I meant just kicking it down the pitch as far as possible, not putting it out of play. Rest of that section still stands, don't play short passes against a pressing team if you don't strongly support the man with the ball. I could see the frustration on Simpson's face. Heard from someone else that they could understand playing him ahead of Ben Arfa because Ben Arfa is a "luxury player". I didn't even try to argue that one. Even if they're not as defensive as you might like, against an intimidating (and it clearly and sadly was intimidating) atmosphere like they experienced last night, you want more your more experienced players playing. It's not the time and the place to take risks.
Lake Bells tits 1
Thats the problem isnt it, Pardew regards a full blown french international, Ligue 1 winning, Champions league playing lad a risk defensively.

Who's taking their places? Maybe some people should accept our best options in some cases have limited ability. I dont totally disagree with that but there is also the option to change things around, use your squad, rest some players all of which Pardew doesnt seem to want to entertain at the moment. For Example and yes I know Jonas could have a go on the right, a breather a fresh start and bring Shane or Sammy in on the left. or give Jonas a couple of weeks re-charge and just start with Shane and Sammy. There are always choices and decisions that can be made other than simply going with the old or accepting our lot til better players arrive. I appreciate the comments also about a lot of these players got us here. The bottom line is though that its not really working any more. Even Tiote as Ant mentioned earlier has turned into Batty. Lake Bells tits 1
Shane on the left, ben arfa on the right. Tiote and cabaye in the middle. santon on the left. And why not? Our argentine international is out of steam and obertan needs to be perma-benched. Edited December 31, 2011 by Lake Bells tits

There is better within the squad. I don't think anyone that wants to be taken seriously is suggesting we go out and buy replacements for those players. We will be lucky to get one. What we should be doing is limiting some of those players time on the pitch as much as possible. To suggest anyone thinks we should expect half a dozen replacements, or even two, other than the WUMS is misrepresenting the argument for whatever reason. Aeris 0
CT is not a dumbass, we have been slashing the same sword against our foes for half a season, and it has now become blunt as hell... it needs sharpening and maybe it's even worth trying with a different weapon. even limited players with excellent morale can win us matches, but we need changes to keep those players interested and right now they are not.
