BigWalrus 0
And Tiote doesnt offer enough going forward. He will never sign a midfielder whos only job is to be a cleaner, that is not enough at Manchester United. Depends on the formation and the other players at disposal. Take Arsenal for example, with Fabregas and Nasri. Tiote could have sat quite nicely behind them and mopped up.
Lake Bells tits 1
He could but there are players similar to tiote who are better going forward. Im just not sure they want that little extra defensive grit if it means 0 goals/0 assists from that position every season. Just my view mind
BigWalrus 0
If there are players better at assists, you're better off letting them have the ball. There's nobody better (in our side at least) at breaking up play, and I'm happy to have him sit and guard for 90 minutes.
rogerbarton 24
Djemba Djemba probably put him off. To be honest, apart from Scholes, and maybe the injured Fletcher, I don't think they have a particularly gifted central midfielder there at all. You make a fair point, I guess what I was trying to say is that he offers little else - in modern fotball there is more to a defensive midfielder than breaking up play, in the same way there is more to a striker than only scoring goals. Otherwise why have none of the top clubs gone for Darren Bent. Edited April 3, 2012 by Lake Bells tits

I suppose it's down to whether you want two box-to-box midfielders, or a specialist break up merchant to allow the attacking players to play with freedom. I actually think Tiote is useful going forward, but not in terms of creating or scoring the goal. His complete drive and determination allows him to turn defence into attack very quickly. Lake Bells tits 1
Which begs the question can CL-clubs afford a specialist break-up merchant in a league where the biggest challenge often is to penetrate teams parking the bus. In Europe I can see the need more clearly. I do think most teams would take him, mid-table clubs would probably sell their sister to get him - but will the top clubs splash 20 mill for a break-up merchant? Offensive players carry a steeper pricetag compared to defensive anchors etc.
BigWalrus 0
Fabregas / Nasri era Arsenal always looked far weaker going forwards when Alex Song was missing. He knitted the midfield together and allowed the others to do their thing. Vital cog in that sort of setup.
rogerbarton 24
Arsenal are a good example, because they play in a similar way as to how we've set up in the last couple of games - a midfield destroyer would work well in behind two creative types. That said, Song's actually a great all round player in my opinion. I'm just not sure I'd buy into the idea that, say, a Tiote - Sneijder central midfield pairing wouldn't work well. Lake Bells tits 1
Yep, but then again, in the 2010/2011 season Alex Song had 5 goals and 3 assists, and this season he has 2 goals and 13 assists, so he does contribute a bit offensively as well, and thats just going off raw statistics. BigWalrus 0
Tiote would have more licence to go forward when we're 3 or 4 goals up. If we've only got a 1 goal margin, he's barely going to venture past halfway. I'm sure he'll chip in with a few more if we continue with a Ba - Cisse - Ben Arfa front trio. Dr Gloom 22181
i personally think tiote is the classic modern defensive midfielder. he's not just a ball winner in the david batty/nicky butt mould. he can beat a man and pick a pass, while having the discipline and athleticism to excel in the position. i reckon he's up there alongside vieria, keane and makalele as the premiership's best defensive midfielders. he's our most important player after colo right now. Dr Gloom 22181
Bit harsh on Keane and Vieira to label them as defensive midfielders. well, that's kind of the point innit. there's more to all of those players than just winning the ball. they had more defensive responsibilities than the players they played alongside in central midfield but they were also capable of starting attacking moves and beating players. modern defensive midfielders basically. Tooj 17
Keane was true box to box, but played with Scholes, so technically did. Petit and Gilberto were more defensive than Vieira.
