loonyTOON 10
Just seen Pardew on the local news saying "You can smash a ball in from 30 yards, or hit a great volley or whatever. But that goal he scored today.....there's not many players who can do something like that. You have to be a special player to do that." So can the crybabies that keep claiming that Pardew doesn't rate Ben Arfa, doesn't talk about him nicely enough , and all the rest of it, please shut the fuck up. well put! Barney 0
I think Trevor Sinclairs bicycle kick won goal of the season from a cup match. I've probably got none of the above information correct.

He was saying in the summer as well, "special special player", "talisman" etc. Then half a year of water boy duty. He can call him Cheryl Cole in a drag for all I care, as long as he rots on the bench its pretty evident something is amiss. If you rate a player, dont you start him? NORWEGIAN WUM MAFIA /OUT! Ally 0
I don't get the confusion with HBA and the fanboy fascination. Remember the obsession some had with Luque?! I rate HBA and he's clearly a class player but one who is tricky to fit in the side. Not a fan of Obertan but you can see why he gets a game ahead of him on the wing with his tracking back, pace on the counter etc. He's not very effective at either but he replicates the leg work done by Jonas on the left. Pardew clearly isn't convinced by HBA's defensive abilities to play there and his fanboys would be the first to complain when Simpson is getting raped cos of a lack of cover! For me he plays on the wing in a 4-3-3 where it's almost a forward position or in the 4-4-1-1. Players like him are difficult to fit into a 442 which is the problem Pardew has and given our success so far had been on that 442 system it requires a whole new game to accomodate him. "Not very effective" would be paying him a massive compliment IMO. Massively useless is a more fitting term. And Im not alone in thinking that judging by the booing and cheering when he comes off recently as well. People are growing tired of him, and for good reason. Dr Gloom 21954
When weighing up who should play out wide, It's easy to question HBA's defensive work. But it's pretty much impossible to make the case for Obertan getting the nod ahead of him on any level. Hatem seems the better option in all areas, Obertan a bench player at best. Happy Face 29
Blackburn won a couple of throw ins in a row in line with our 18 yard box and over the minute or 2 of play where they took them and we intercepted HBA didn't move off his spot watching play go by. A couple of Blackburn players sauntered past him and he didn't pick one of them up or close down any angles whatsoever. It was easily as infuriating as Obertan going past 2 men and then passing back to Simpson. Can't complain when he's done this... But he'll need to do it again against QPR and regularly to avoid this argument going on.

What I don't understand is why people aren't willing to give Ben Arfa time to play to adjust to all aspects of the Premier League before making judgements about his work ethic etc. We know he is an extremely talented dribbler of the ball, and has an impressive arsenal of passes that will stay the same regardless of the league, but we don't know how he'll react to the increased pace and physicality of the league. Likewise in regards to match fitness over 90 minutes at full pace you really do need to play a series of games to be able to last a full game and still be effective. Sporadic cameo appearances can't have helped that.
Park Life 71
Good point. Most would accept that it takes half a season of regular playing for even the most talented to adjust to the frenetic pace of the PL. PL history is litered with players who took time to settle or looked crap in their first season...Collo is a case in point and to an extent Guti. Thing is HBA looks excellent yet he hasn't even had a fair run of games to pick up the heat of the PL. Most Euro leages are a dawdle compared to the ridiculous pace we play at. It's a bit like basketball really flashing from one end to the other.

Park Life 71
Cantona(early days), Hoddle (with Eng) and even now Spain overlooking Silva comes to mind..Specially gifted players are still seen as suspect or workshy or somehow mavericks...They always have to be seen to do more than just be really good. These days they have to score goals, link play, track back..shift gear, have pace...Do that trick with fags where you flick it into yer mouth...It'd ridiculous. The PL is just one sad engine room of huff and puff and not much else. Most games are tedious to watch. When something truly beautiful comes along it's no wonder it is barely recognised. Ben Arfa is a mirror a mirror who reflects the genuine sadness and dullness modern football has become. Secretly he is hated for it. Tooj 17
Spain overlooked Silva due to them having better players at the time. Cantona was overlooked by France as he'd pissed pretty much every member of the French FA off in his time.

Sporadic cameo appearances can't have helped that. I think everyone wants him to get that. But that doesn't mean Pardew's dilemma is as inconceivable as the fanboys are suggesting. Irrespective of what he brings to the team compared to other players, you could say Pardew is handling Ben Arfa perfectly. He's eager to produce something with the ball when he does get a chance, and he's not being dropped into high paced game after game following 18+ months on the sidelines. As keen as we all are to see him regularly produce, we don't want to see another injury. Even if he would win us games single handedly, if it's the difference between finishing 10th or 8th, it's not worth it in the scheme of things. Kid Gloves is common sense for a young lad with his injury record.
Christmas Tree 4728
The answer to the Ben Arfa problem is playing right wing. Hopefully all parties now agreed this is the way forward.
Christmas Tree 4728
Must admit I'm really annoyed how little coverage his goal is getting on the National radio shows. Obviously I spend hours in the car so listen to these stations more than most and haven't heard it discussed at all. If fucking Rooney had scored it there would be a national holiday declared. Not happy.
