HAD you told him last summer, Newcastle United would, by now, be on course for Europe, Robbie Elliott might well have said: “On yer bike!”

Too tall a tale to pedal, if you’ll pardon the pun.

Yet as it is, the former Toon favourite – soon to be cycling across the Continent in aid of the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation – admits he will be disappointed if, come next season, his old club are not there as well.

United stand sixth in the Premier League, a point off a Champions League spot. Seventh – depending on who wins what – could be enough for the Europa League.

And although he confesses to having been taken by surprise by Alan Pardew’s men this term, Elliott has also been mightily impressed with them.

Losing Joey Barton and Kevin Nolan, he feared losing the fight.

Knowing little of the likes of Demba Ba and Yohan Cabaye, he knew less still how they might fill the void.

But crediting Pardew for bringing the best out of them, Elliott has hailed “quality players, playing as a team”.

And the Gosforth-born former defender says Newcastle must strive now to maintain a charge on Europe.

“I would have to say that I have been surprised by Newcastle this season,” said Elliott. “Not in the quality of the players, that’s always been there.

“It’s just nice because they seem to be playing as a team and there’s a good fighting spirit in there.

“I think the worry was that by losing the likes of Joey Barton and Kevin Nolan last summer, we might not have that.

“But the players they’ve brought in have been fantastic.

“That was the thing in the summer – I didn’t know much about Yohan Cabaye, I didn’t know much about Demba Ba, but the goals he has brought are something we weren’t expecting.

“You were always hopeful that they were going to be able to perform, but they’ve done amazingly well.

“The manager’s certainly getting the best out of the players, and we look like a really good team. It’s just been fantastic.”

which pocket is that in?

this isn't skunkers mate

 This isn't debate mate.

of course. Nobody expected you to get into any debate at all, other than encouraging the club to spend millions it didn't have through a manager who didn't know what he was doing.

Would be canny if you admitted this like, you're as mad and stupid as your mate the grey man.

No doubt we have sold and bought well this season but you don't become a top 4 club by making a net profit on transfers over a 4 year period - this is as good as it gets with Ashley and it shows a complete lack of ambition

Its so fucking basic its unbelievable

If level of spending is the sole measure of ambition then we should all take our hats off to Rangers and their efforts!! If there is any justice then they should win champions league next year!

What is the net spend if you remove the INSANE £35 million for Carroll??? how does the 4 year period you have imposed look then??

Interesting to know that in 19 years Arsenal have a net spend of around £20 million.... wow!!

I for one could not give a flying fuck how much the net spend is, I gauge success in the transfer market by how much improvement i can see in the team/squad/club. Given that mistakes have been made, i think the improvement in the team is a mark of how a different approach is (at this moment in time,) getting results and improving the club. If we improve the team and squad AND somehow make some money on transfers, how can that be a bad thing?? Granted i'd like to see the money reinvested, BUT I am showing some faith in the policy of getting value in transfers. Yes, Ashley will not spunk 5 years worth of sponsorship on one player, but how is that wrong, given that the previous approach won us fuck all!!

this this and this!

It doesnt matter how much we spend on a player. As NUFC fans we should know that, it matters about who we bring in and recently we have brought in some great players!

and sold some great! players and withheld the money from the manager. When we back the manager and qualify for the Champions League, come back, until then pipe down with your juvenile and naive statements.

far too basic for some it seems. This place is becoming more and more like Newcastle Online and skunkers all the time, the quality of posters is sinking rapidly if idiots like this is anything to go by. Even to the point of them calling for the banning of someone who "disagrees with them" [boohoo] yet are saying the actual reality rather than believing in fairies.

At least you're admitting the club was spending millions that it didn't have, now perhaps you could tell us how spending millions you don't have is a sustainable way to run a football club?

It's a breakthrough for you to admit that, I'm impressed.

Said at the time that they shouldn't be bankrolling Souness, dear boy, unlike our expert accountant ie Gemmill.

When are you going to admit that your DOF system that you insisted would bring guaranteed success purely because of the system, has failed ? And that it failed here at Newcastle under Wise and Keegan when you supported Wise, and it has failed at your precious Spurs having been discarded by Redknapp who for some reason you are also now pretending you have supported all along ?

The truth about Spurs is they were run "like a business, within their means" under Alan Sugar and we pissed all over them when we were run by football men, and now the situation is reversed and they are now run by football men and we are being run by "like a business, within our means" [and not even backing our manager with the money from sales, which is even worse].

Will you fuck off you OOT arsehole! The club was doing very well as a business until 2004, and FFS made some errors, we weren't living beyond our means till that point.

But now you're saying we were giving him millions that we didn't have, I'm asking you how this is a sustainable business model?

Also Spurs are ran like a business so I'm not sure what you're on about there.

Yes and he fucked it all up by giving a manager millions that the club didn't have, as Leazes has already pointed out.

Not that I expect you to oppose Shepherd gambling with money he didn't have since you went bankrupt doing it yourself. Mug.

Fuck off you brummie nonce, you're not needed or welcome you knob. If you're prepared to say personal things like that on a message board you should be prepared to do it to someones face but you're a cowardly arsehole. You'd have a hard job though seeing as you get to Newcastle bi-annually.

By doing well you mean breaking even in the two previous years and posting combined losses of £42m in the four years previous to that?

We posted a profit of £25m in one of the years, and iirc our wage/turnover ratio was 45% the best in the league circa 2004. Then Souness came and it went tits up. All this wank is doing is trying to goad Leazes though, been some canny crack about old times on here today and there's always one wank has to spoil it.

Missed shot costs £7m

FAILURE to qualify for the group stage of the Champions League wiped over £7million fromNEWCASTLE UNITED profits this year.

But chairman Freddy Shepherd reassured investors that finances are in good health and unveiled a new five-year deal with kit sponsor Adidas.

Player wages were down a shade and ticket revenues grew. Annual profits fell £7.2million to £20.4million.

£20.4m not £25m. There's another season where it was £18m as well. Pipe down before you know what you're talking about mate.
