7th will never be success for me, but Manchester United and Arsenal whether we like it or not will always be a bigger club than we are, Liverpool are massively bankrolled while, Man City and Chelsea were behind us before Abramovic and the Arabs, while Tottenham are the role model for us they've over taken us. The dynamics of the Premiership are totally different to what they were in 2003. So from being the third or fourth club in the pecking order in 2003, Chelsea and Man City have wiped us out the water and Tottenham are a London club on the up. With the external investment in Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool, and the sheer size of Arsenal and Man Utd, even if we had the set we had on paper in 2003, then we'd be vying for the slot of sixth biggest club with Tottenham in their present form at best.

 

This is an excellent post and it's surprising how much Premiership football has changed since Sir Bobby's day, in fact I'd say the change has been bigger than when Sky got involved in the game to what football was before that.

 

Out have gone the local business men running clubs bringing an era of oversea's billionaire investors wanting to throw money at buying success, the clubs that did attempt to live above their income back then either went under like Leeds or came close to it like Chelsea, now you've got them throwing ten's of millions every transfer window without ever having to worry about the club financing it.

 

Our hope is that the financial fair play rules are enforced fully allowing us to fight on a fair playing field again, if they are then we're now in strong position to compete with nearly everyone.

As nice as it sounds I don't see it happening, our hope is that they have to downscale to run at a level that is self sustaining.

 

At least with Man City they have a quality young squad that they could cash in on if they needed to come under budget, Chelsea on the other hand have a backbone that is on the decline and will hopefully struggle to replace them.

Seriously though, we could probably have a serious go if we plowed another 30-40 millions into the squad by signing 6-7 class players from eresdivisie and ligue 1 for about 5-6 mill each.

The reason we wont is because Mike doesnt want to spend any money at all. It is possible, the same way it is possible to spend 100 mill like liverpool and still end up with a bunch of shite players.

Just comes down to scouting and youth development.

 

Bottom line: Carroll-money alone could - wisely spent - have bought half a team of top4-5 quality players like cabaye. Shame it didnt and probably the reason we can still only hope for 7th at best.

PS...if anything, if what you say is true, rather than absolute shite, it only escalates the job they did, being a selling club and qualifying for europe more than any other club bar 4 in 15 years, breaking the world transfer record, buying all those "trophy players", running for the league title and finishing 2nd twice, playing in the champions league, transforming the stadium into one of the best in europe and the turnover 14th in world football ?
