PaddockLad 17653
Maldini was two footed, and i'm not saying Santon isn't a decent leftback, he is... but he'd be better on the right, and you'd see considerably more end product from him if he was. (if santon proves to be half the player for us that Maldini was in his career, he can play wherever the fuck he likes ) Maldini is imo the greatest defender ever, even better than the Kaiser who is the only one who could arguably rival him After that you can have Baresi/Alberto/Passarella/Cafu McGrath:wub: etc but they all had faults/problems, Maldini just had everything, and when he started to lose his pace and had to move into the middle it made no odds as his positioning had always been faultless anyway, the benchmark for the complete defender. Well Madini and Beckenbauer were for the vast majority of their careers playing in completely different posistions and with different roles and jobs in the teams they played for so its not a good comparison iyam. Beckenbauer invented the attacking "Libero" position, or sweeper as it was known in this country, on his own virtually. You would never have described Maldini as a sweeper, despite his move to the middle later in his career. As a defender he was a marker, as most Italian defenders are..a brilliant one as you say like, but there were big diffferences between them. Gejon 2
He said has been our best player, not us our best. He gave no timescale, personally I feel Gazza was better.

Christmas Tree 4827
This lad is going to be one of the best full-backs around. Yup, think he seems to be getting better and better each time he plays. Going to score lots of goals (for a full back) as well.
Brock Manson 0
I'm glad to see the defensive side of his game is slowly improving with more games. He's always looked a bit suspect to me when wingers go 1-on-1 against him, but now he's winning possession for us consistently. Looks like he's acclimatising very well. Give it another season and he'll be the best attacking left back in the league.
Alex 35583
Would still ideally like us to sign a left-footed full-back and see him moved to the right to combine with HBA.
Ayatollah Hermione 14053
Would still ideally like us to sign a left-footed full-back and see him moved to the right to combine with HBA. When Simpson heads to the smoke with his lass, that'll happen. We might have to wait a bit like because I can't see us signing more than one player in January and that'll be a centre half. Tooj 17
Cant see why we just dont sign a left back and move Santon to the right? Santon himself has stated he thinks his game is better suited to the left. Personall I think that the club won't be specifically targeting a specialised full-back for either side, but due to Santon's creativity they will just bring in any full-back for what they deem to be good value regardless of what foot they prefer. Alex 35583
I wouldn't be surprised if we don't sign a centre-back in Jan. Douglas is on a free in the summer isn't he?
Alex 35583
He's not likely to say otherwise given he's the only viable option at left-back anyway.

You might be right, I don't know. I find it hard to believe they won't sign someone in January though. Probably another central midfielder knowing us. David Kelly 1260
I think the defensive side of his game would improve on the right. It's got to be more difficult when a winger's going at you on your wrong foot.

Tooj 17
http://www.football-italia.net/29438/tassotti-praises-santon Milan assistant manager Mauro Tassotti confirmed interest in Newcastle’s Davide Santon. “It would be good for Italian football to have him back.” The full-back left Inter due to a lack of playing time and has become a key figure for the Magpies. “I know that Santon was a promising youngster and I don’t think he has lost those qualities,” Tassotti told Sky Sport Italia. “It would be good for Italian football to have him back in the country. Dr Gloom 22149
Can we please stop considering selling more first team players. We're in a relegation battle here in case they haven't noticed.
aimaad22 4222
Cant believe we would sell both Colo and Santon in the same window given our situation. Surely even the fat man isnt that daft. Wait we have Shane, no need to worry.
PaddockLad 17653
Can't see an Italian club paying over 10 million quid for a full back....Citeh,Chelsea and PSG country that sort of thing. I think he's off in the summer mind. Maybe we'll get Bong then. Thats a fuckin headline writers dream
Christmas Tree 4827
Yes it was Talk Sport, but they had some English / Italian journo on yesterday saying that it is no secret in Italy that Santon is desperately home sick and wants to return.
