Thought he was canny slow to react. My overall point was that people wanting to drop Taylor is more to do with a longer held opinion on him coupled with the unknown quantity of Santon on the bench who is rated. Let's not forget people were calling for Marveaux to start on the right despite him being one-dimensional and uncomfortable out there in the games he played wide right. Santon should be the next RB as soon as Simpson's out the team, not the LB. Taylor's been infinitely more solid than Simpson this year IMO (though, I accept that part of that is down to Gutierrez' contributions defensively (which again, brings up the ludicrous notion that some people have had of dropping him)), is more comfortable with the ball at his feet and has scored important goals. Simpson offers nothing but a decent sprinter. Drop Taylor when we get a natural LB but IMO, he's done nowt to warrant getting dropped like. This game wasn't the straw that broke the camel's back ala Williamson's shite run of form that let Steven Taylor back in, just one dodgy game against the best team in the country and the most in-form full back in the league. Evra struggled, Assou-Ekotto struggled, Warnock struggled, Olsson would have struggled. He's not a scapegoat for our loss yesterday.

I've since watched the full 90 minutes btw. Mistakes, aye but fucking hell, Steven Taylor has made worst mistakes in the past year.

I'm on board with everything else, but I thought Marveaux was excellent wide right against Everton and didn't look uncomfortable at all. He's a big loss.

Calls for R. Taylor to be dropped are perhaps a bit premature. He was torn up by the best attack in the Premier League and he isn't a left-back (or really any sort of defender at all.) But throwing Santon in the deep end seems like a bad plan as well.

I think we should persevere with R. Taylor for a couple of games, but I do have two questions: why aren't we even giving Santon minutes? If we don't want to drop Ryan for him, I understand that, but he's made what, three appearances? He could've come on as a sub yesterday once we were 3-0 down, if not for R. Taylor then for Simpson.

Secondly, why is it that we sold our only left back and then replaced him with a right back while playing a (sort of) right back as left back in the meantime? In other words, how did we lose our only recognised left back and STILL not have one when the season began? Criminally poor planning from gambler Ashley yet again. It was bad enough that we never brought in cover for Enrique, but having no specialist left backs is mismanagement at its finest.

Maybe's we should drop Ba aswell then for missing 2 sitters then?

Ben Arfa is a much better player than Best but people were happy not to change drop Best cos he was doing pretty decent in an unbeaten team

Seems people were waiting for R Taylor to make a mistake for them to champion Santon to replace him. He's surpassed all expectations that we had at the start of the season when we started him, give him some credit man he's been no means been sh*te for us this season and doesnt warrant getting dropped on one performance.

Plus if we hadn't of fannied around for weeks getting a replacement for Enrique we could have had him starting at LB from the start of the season and that why he isn't in the team, because weve done well all season and the lack of decision making getting him in quick enough.

I haven't read this thread but I think Simpson is more inconsistent than R.Taylor and regularly performs poorer.

Get Santon at right back and court Peiterson or Cissokho in summer for left back.

We're not championing Ryan Taylor so much as we are instead pointing out how ridiculous it is to drop him after making 2 mistakes in favour of giving a player with pretty muh no PL experience a start against the champions. A player with a lot to prove, a player of clearly seriously strong potential, but also a player nowhere near the finished product who has stagnated significantly since the glory days of that Man Utd game and being called up by Italy.

If he hadn't have made those mistakes, this thread wouldn't exist. Your man Santon might have made those mistakes and people would instead have been complaining about him being thrown in against the league leaders.

Why does this bother you so much Ant? Can't you see where we're coming from?

I look at Simpson as a guy who won't make massive mistakes that cost us games, but he is a player whose ability is sufficiently meagre to cost us games, iykwim?

I look at R.Taylor as a player who will dive into tackles due to poor positioning, who will give the ball away needlessly and in so doing, cost us games.

By that reasoning I'd rather Simpson be in the team as it's easier for the other 4 defensive players to cover Simpson's frailties, than it is for them to rescue R.Taylor's blunders.

I'd probably have another look at the moods of Santon and R.Taylor as I think they're both confidence players and the mistakes against Citeh could have severely damaged R.Taylor's, but then again Santon may not look ready yet. In the future? I'd rather play Santon as he's got that intangible potential, whereas R.Taylor is as good as he's ever going to be.

taylor offers more going forward through his delivery. he takes the best set piece by a mile too. simpson better defensively though - his pace gets him out of trouble more often but he's not the best on the overlap.

I dont think we'd suffer a great deal on the set pieces by not having him in if we've cabaye and Ben arfa playing

As I've said in the past, raylor is an accident waiting to happen in just about every game he plays. Poor defender with shocking positional sense. Just because he can deliver a free kick occasionally...and he can...that isn't enough to overcome his defensive inadequacy. He's lucky he has Jonas working his arse off around him.

I don't particularly rate him (and that's being kind) but he's done very well for the most part this season. I also think he's such a confidence player that if you were to drop him on the back of one poor game, especially with no tailor-made replacement waiting in the wings then I think you might as well give up on him for good and sell him in the next window. I don't see Santon as being the perfect replacement. He's new to this country etc. and doesn't even get a start for the Italian U21s so the reference to him as an Italian international doesn't quite tell it as it is.

His set pieces aren't the best by a country mile like. Thats why Cabaye takes the corners

he's first in the queue for any free kicks in dangerous situations. he whips in almost all of our set pieces into the box better than anyone i've seen and he almost always gets it over the wall and tests the keeper with direct efforts - a v difficult thing to do consistently.

don't know why he isn't on corners tbh. he hits the ball flatter and with more dip than cabaye going on what i've seen. cabaye's deliveries seem to have less pace on them. taylor's are a nightmare to defend.
