Considering the NR rebranding to Virgin Money is effective from January 2012, it's an interesting point that has been raised.

Presumably the contract we have with NR runs until next summer so it's surely down to Virgin whether they want their logo or the defunct brand on the shirts for the final 6 months.

That said it's not unprecedented for a sponsor to change partway through a season. We did it ourselves back in 1990/91 and I'm pretty certain that QPR changed their shirt sponsorship to Fernandes' 'Air Asia' brand when he bought the club earlier this season.

There'll probably be a clause in the contract allowing the club to charge extra in these circumstances. Mike will invoke this clause to the max possible - likely resulting Virgin telling us to do one and giving MA free SD shirts advertisements from January 1st.

Goody fucken gumdrops.

Didn't Dekka mention something about him needing to find a sponsor by christmas?!?!?! I've just had a chill down my spine :(

I hadn't thought about that part of the interview tbh, the fact that he's saying that there's such a rush on to find a sponsor only increases the likelihood of it being SD.

I can't see SD going on the shirt. The club (Mike) will want to bring in money from the deal.

Depends if you think he's after money or exposure for his brand. I think it's the latter in which terms it'd make perfect sense.

Do SD really need anymore exposure? There the biggest sports retail store in the country.

Ermm... need I remind you our shirts sell outside of the UK? And also Premiership football is broadcast outside the UK?

If the FCB put SD on the shirt, NOBODY would buy it. He would lose loads of revenue from shirt sales.

The club would lose revenue, but is that already happening if SD is not paying for advertising space - is he bothered? SD revenue globally might increase more than the loss in shirt sales.

If he's gunning for the global market then having SD on shirts means his brand is advertised in all Newcastle games, not just those played at St James' Park. This increase in exposure will likely be too much for him to resist, as well as knowing it will piss off the nasty name-calling fans.

You only need to look at how many people bought the monstrous yellow strip to know that this isn't true. He'll lose some sales, but loads will still buy it.

In the paper today saying that Virgin Money would speak to Newcastle at the "Right time" about sponsoring Newcastle United. Looks possible that they will switch the Virgin Money logo on to the shirts come January.

Would fecking love it if they sponsored us and gave SJP back its name!

Virgin @ St James' Park, a rarity indeed

It's certainly a great way to give a brand a start because you know the word 'controversial' will crop up if he does sponsor us.

I doubt people would buy the shirt if it has 'Sports Direct' on it so they need someone to come in to stop them scoring a massive own goal.

Branson has always had the theory that there's no greater advertisment than the popular press regardless of whether it's good press or bad press. NUFC is currently getting exposure - it might be right up his street.
