Speaking to the Scotsman newspaper however, Hibs boss Colin Calderwood claimed that Airey had been unwilling to return to Easter Road following treatment: "If he (Airey) is not going to be comfortable and happy you are not going to get the best out of him. "Everyone has come to an agreement. You cannot force someone to play for you, it would be wrong to have him here and him not being in contention because he was always not wanting to be here but would rather be at Newcastle." Due to the extent of the injury he would just basically be doing rehabilitation with Hibs until the end of the loan period so there was no point in him being there.
