If we spent £8m on Demba Ba then there wouldn't be that much expectation on getting a new striker. Likewise if Cabaye/Ben Arfa cost £10m as well. It's all perception in terms of the players we have. The core of the team looks solid to me. Of course Fatty should have strengthened even further.

I'll probably get slated for this but I think Ba will come good & Best will be decent squad player. With Ben Arfa & Marveux to come in then we can still go up a notch.

The huge problem we have at the mo is full backs. We desperately need 2 quality ones in January (Also need a good CB for cover). Left back especially. Jonas is doing an admiral job helping out Raylor but if we have some quality there we could well see a more offensive player (Ben Arfa/Marveux) add an extra attacking dimension on the wing. At the mo Jonas has to play.

Pards likes to talk the players up and there's no harm in that as a short term strategy, especially post a comfortable win (against a workmanlike side who will be in relegation bother).

IMO he's talking the team UP too early and I don't know whether its because he has a personal PR agenda or he thinks the team really need to hear this stuff. But its too early for the kind of BIG TALK he's starting to lay down.

The confidence in the side is at a level where I think we can give anyone 'a game' at home as it stands, but I think it is fragile and may prove to be a false dawn if we take a couple of cainings off the top 3/4 in quick succession and then it will be a long way back to get the minds right again.

The Stoke - ManU game interested me yesterday cause we saw that Stoke who 'hunt in packs' and are a big side with a lot of energy and organisation (Everton v ManC first half comes to mind), even the BIG sides in the PL can be neutralised. I'm wondering if we truly have the defensive quaities of Stoke and Everton to withstand the barrage that will come against Chelsea, ManU and ManC (look at the goal difference of the top two after so few games and look at teams on negative GD who are even in the top 12...It shows how far ahead the top 2/3 are of the pack.

This season really could go either way...It's a real shame that we're missing a couple of players: a striker and one more good cover in the defensive pack. The main reason being the league is much of a muchness outside of the top 3 and we could have had a very interesting season (we have a quality midfield) IF MASHLEY HAD GONE THE EXTRA MILE IN THE SUMMER.

Outside of the top 6 in all honesty.

I meant to put 3/4. :nufc:

Think Liv will have an average season IMHO (5th or 6th)...Arsenal will come back over the next couple of months.

We shouldn't really fear Spurs at home or Liv at home.

I take your point however. :nufc:

Think there are 3 packs unfolding...

ManU

ManC

Chelsea

Spurs

Liv

Arsenal

The rest.......

We should beat Spurs at home, as they tend to do shite up here. However, I think people are underestimating them this season as they haven't really added to their squad, which is still rather good. Plus they've now got Adebayor, which is what they lacked last season.

I'd say 4th is out of them and Arsenal, with the murderers finishing 6th. Outside of that, anything's possible.

Modibo-Maiga+cropped

Rivals Newcastle and Sunderland face a January showdown for Sochaux striker Modibo Maiga.

The Black Cats are poised to go head-to-head with their neighbours over the 23-year-old Mali star.

Newcastle were bitterly disappointed not to land him before the August transfer window closed.

Maiga, who was involved in a strike row with his club in August, is determined to land a dream move to the Premier League and named Newcastle as his preferred destination.

But the Black Cats interest could spark a North-East bidding war.

Newcastle thought they had all but completed a £7m deal for Maiga before Sochaux began playing hard ball over the fee.

2010– Sochaux 36 (14)

But Bruce is keen to add another striker to his squad, despite securing Niklas Bendtner on loan from Arsenal as cover for Asamoah Gyan.

If we spent £8m on Demba Ba then there wouldn't be that much expectation on getting a new striker.

Yeah. Not exactly, but there'd be less expectation. Isn't that the point?

Its the same as the fullback position. We needed a player, we sold one, got one in, and still need one more.

Only difference with the striker situation is the player we sold was for an absolute fortune and was replaced for nothing.

If you believe (as I do) that we're operating on a 'one out one in' principle, then Carroll was replaced by Ba. Which means unless the likes of Lovenkrands, Ranger or (please God) Ameobi get transferred in Jan, there's little prospect of seeing a new striker this season. In the summer Smith, Guthrie and I think Loven's contracts are up which gives more headroom. If we were serious about kicking on we'd recruit a new striker, CB and RB but presumably that would shoot the wage bill/budget to shit so I doubt we'll see anything in Jan, especially if the current rate of progress is maintained. Which is a crying shame.

Honestly we're a couple of players away from being a decent side.

Especially since I assume Ba will be off to play in the Africa Nations Cup, which would leave us very short upfront.

Ameobi could play for Nigeria but I see that as improving the squad if he does.

Yep. I agree. Unfortunately I also agree that we have a 1 in, 1 out policy.

Colo will be gone by next Summer imo as well which will be big boots to fill.

I agree aswell.

If we had have kept Enrique and Barton we'd have a real quality first XI.

Then a few quality backups for depth with the some of the Carroll money left over and everything would be rosy.

At the moment if we get injuries we are fucked. To highlight how fucked, Perch is backup centreback and fullback and Guthrie is the backup midfielder. Scary.

Yeah. I don't rate Williamson. Hes strong and good in the air which is enough to make him a quality championship defender, but the rest of his game is sub-standard for the PL.

Gosling we haven't seen enough of to judge and Abeid is a kid.

Even having Perch on the bench is a sign we are in desperate need of extra depth.

I think the policy is gear toward the wage bill rather than a body count.
