Happy Face 29
He's clearly better than Alan Smith (referring to the posts calling for Smith to start over Obertan, if serious). Yet I've never seen cheering for Smith being dragged off.

Yet I've never seen cheering for Smith being dragged off. You'll have to take this into your own hands. Bring an extendable vuvuzela to the game and if someone boos Obertan plant it right in their earhole and let off a few honks--that'll show 'em. Christmas Tree 4866
Absolutely delighted for the lad last night. Hopefully that gives him enough confidence to take his game on to the next level.
Christmas Tree 4866
Gabriel Obertan admitted that his first goal in black and white was a weight off his shoulders, and hopes that it will help him to 'unlock his potential' and score many more. The former Manchester United winger netted in injury time as Newcastle won 2-0 at Blackburn on Wednesday night - moments after coming on as a substitute at Ewood Park. With the home side piling on the pressure as they searched for an equaliser, he could barely have picked a better time to end his 21-game barren streak for the Magpies. And when he spoke to nufc.co.uk after emerging from a vibrant dressing room, the Paris-born 22-year-old revealed that the long wait for his first goal had been beginning to play on his mind. "A bit, a bit," he confessed. "I'm an offensive player so it's important to make assists or to score. "So I wanted to score and I'm pleased with it, but hopefully I can unlock all my potential and maybe I can score a bit more. "I'm really pleased. I'm pleased for the team as well but personally, I've been looking for that goal for so long. "In the last three or four games, I've not played and I was a bit frustrated, so it's just great to score to seal the win at the end of the game. "They were trying and trying really hard to get a goal so it was great to score." Obertan siezed possession inside his own half before exchanging passes with Peter Lovenkrands and bearing down on goal, his pace taking him clear and allowing him to finish cooly past Paul Robinson in front of the Newcastle fans in the Darwen End. And he explained: "By then the game was really open, so I just gave him (Lovenkrands) the ball and ran to give him a solution, to give him an option. "I just kept running and the finish was quite difficult actually, because I had a lot of time so you've got plenty of things going through your mind. "It was quite hard but I was lucky on this one and it's a great feeling. I've not scored much but when you score and you've got your fans in front of you, it's just unbelievable." The win took United up to fifth in the table but also means they're just one point short of the 40 generally required to guarantee Barclays Premier League safety. So with that all but assured, the winger - accustomed to challenging at the top end of the league during his days at Old Trafford - is aiming high. "We've gone two points above Arsenal now and hopefully we can win this weekend and get three more points," he said. "We're quite sure we're going to stay in the Premier League and that's great. "Hopefully we can get more points between now and the end of the season and maybe go up one more place or stay fifth. "If you would have said at the beginning of the season that we'd be up in fifth in February, I think we would have signed straight away so it's a great feeling at the moment - and hopefully we can keep the momentum." OTF 7583
Good on him. It's easy to forget that he's only 22, so could be a late bloomer in terms of his ability to read a game and make the right options.
JawD 99
He done well for the goal like. Lacking in confidence you'd think he'd have looked to lay it off. Took it well.

David Kelly 1260
Good on him, everything about the goal (his lay off, run & finish) looked to show the confidence he's seemed to lack all season thus far. Hopefully he can kick on from this and actually become a worthwhile member of the squad from now on.
2bias 3
Very well taken goal by Obertan. Obviously been told to step up his performances if he wants to starts games. Looked good when he came on for his cameo
Holden McGroin 6802
He should be used as an impact player off the bench. Yesterday was an ideal game for him due to the space he was afforded. He has generally been rubbish all season against a solid team. Its amazing how a goal changes some peoples opinions.
Dr Gloom 22216
He's still young, he's still been crap for most of the season. He's still got all the physical attributes like pace and close control to succeed. we still don't know if has the heart or the football brain to do so. Credit where it's due - that was a good finish, not easy when you've so much time to think about it.
Holden McGroin 6802
That is one of the easier chances he'll ever get (especially with his pace). If he had have missed that it would have been classed as a sitter.
Guest alex
I thought it was an excellent finish although I agree about using him as an impact sub rather than starting him.

If he had have missed that it would have been classed as a sitter. If he'd missed the target or fluffed in completely maybe. Had to at least force a decent save - did MUCH better than that and placed it nicely past Robinson. Couldn't really have asked for a better finish. McFaul 35
I was one of the only people I know who hasn't lost support for him, he needs people to believe in him and he's young, and I'll never slag anyone off who works hard. Best and Shola on the other hand..... Good lad.

sandman02uk 0
i actually thought that it was a difficult goal to score, i think he did extremely well in the run upto the goal and the finish, you wont see a much better finish anywhere still don't think much of him, but pleased for him
Holden McGroin 6802
one on one with the keeper? Good finish but he and any decent PL footballer should be scoring them.
Tom 14021
Bellamy & Dyer used to miss plenty one on one's. It's not always easy, especially when the pass is on & a defender is coming from behind, the angle closes. He took it well.

Brock Manson 0
Very telling that Best & Shola did fuck all for the entire time they were on the pitch yet McLoven combines with Squidders to seal the points. Quite how they keep being automatically selected and undropable is a mystery.
