Christmas Tree 4834
Went looking for a Leon Best thread and couldn't believe the man on who our season rests, didnt have one! We love you Leon and know you will come good and continue your excellent goal scoring record for us. (To the tune of Robin Hood for those that like to sing a long). Leon Best, Leon Best, he will lead the line. Leon Best, Leon Best, he's scored nearly nine. Keeps us Shola free That'll do for me Leon Best, Leon Best, Leon Best. loonyTOON 10
What makes me laugh with all you critics on here that his record is better than most strikers since Shearer. Works hard, scores goals. Get off his back and get behind him. He may not be the best ST, but the effort and so far, the rewards are there. ToonMarshy 2
I still think he was fucking ace in the 4-4 vs arsenal last year, goals scored regardless. If he could do that more often and at least TRY to stay onside i would have no issue with having him playing alongside Ba/as a#1 backup. Hes definitely a better option than loverboy purely on strength and ability to hold the ball up alone.

Best's biggest problem - by some distance if you ask me - is his inconsistency. One game he'll look decent, another he'll be woeful (like he was against Scunthorpe). People are far too harsh on him - going by some of the posts in this thread, it's like you want to make him out as worse than he is purely so it's another tool you can use against the club. PS, I can respect Best for giving it his best shot, and he isn't the worst striker I've seen at the club by any stretch of the imagination, but Sir Les he ain't. Ameobi still appears to be the nr 1 striker at the club though, above Best and Ba, which tells you everything. We haven't significantly improved our striking options since selling Carroll, but that was all too predictable. Monroe Transfer 0
aye well done , you've scored <10 goals since joining in jan 2010 (3 of those were unmarked against west ham). His record is like 1in4 or something? and he's only played 28 games'ish since 2010 so lets not go crazy with ratio comparisions, Oba's was 1in3 with 30something goals and he gets dogs abuse and all. Also scored less than 20 in 100 apps for coventry before that iirc, yes he's got a few goals recently, no that mystically doesn't make him good, sorry. You can be happy when he scores, like you can with Shola, you can be happy that he puts effort in (so does 110% alan smith), you can't claim he's not shite....i'm sorry he is. I don't really get on his back, i rarely bring him up tbh because well he's crap so when he plays crap i can't really blame him, that's his level. He didn't have his own thread on here i assume for that reason, because thats how a lot see him, brought in cheap, not expected to do much etc bit of a non entity until he scores or does something really stupid. (yes it's hypocritical I implode when shola does the same.....but thats Shola and he just annoys the fuck outta me) to sum up, shola lovenkrands and best are all shite, bigging up the better out of the 3 just because they're the "best" we have is pointless, it's like arguing which of the ugly sisters is least ugly, end of the day they're all munters no matter how you dress it up. (btw CT if i didn't know better i'd say this was you starting your, we didn't need to sign a striker, we have Leon Best! angle before a "mike was right" post in the near future) Maiga's goal tally before last season was dreadful, didn't stop people on here wanting him. Best was 22 when he joined IIRC, so his goal record isn't worth highlighting that much. Best has scored 6 in 12 (last season) and 2 in 3 this season. Not sure why you're pointing out that his hat-trick doesn't really count, while plenty of other strikers in the world score hat-tricks and wouldn't have them devalued? Its difficult why you are defending such criticism tbh, personally I've nowt against Best at all [see above post] I'm sure he's a good lad and is doing his best, but looking at it ruthlessly, he's not a top premiership striker, with the best will in the world, you have to accept that. Thats football. All footballers know they will be replaced by their clubs if someone better is signed, and in that phrase you have the problem at Newcastle. I said he gets treated unfairly, probably because people are concentrating on the negative side of his inconsistency. I'm only defending him a little, I'm not defending the club in any way, shape or form and you're spot on with your criticisms against them. Best, Shola - possibly even Ba - should all be behind a top first choice striker.
Christmas Tree 4834
Deffo not an excuse for Ashley Ant. I've been very clear we should have had a striker. No excuses. I went looking for a Best thread simply to discuss him as he is currently scoring and the manager has said he is going to get a run. I wrote last year that there was one game when I don't think I've ever seen a worse heading performance from a striker. The ball seemed to hit his head and make it wobble. He also has a tough problem staying onside. But, he does seem to really graft upfront and is better at holding the ball up than Ameobi. He was one of those that really got stuck in against Darlo pre season. So this is not a Best is great thread, just a Best discussion thread seeing how he is "the man" until the next man comes along. I just have this sneaking feeling that he will do well.

A well educated legal eagle trapped in perpetual online warfare with a pensioner discussing self awareness But to address the question specifically please...you do realise that don't you? What I'm saying is this bears all the hallmarks of you forgetting the disappointment/failure to sign a striker (and your 'sneaky feeling') only the other day, not taking any lesson from that, and replacing that with a 'sneaky feeling' something else will work instead. It's not to say Best might not have a half decent season, but that's nothing to do with your instincts about him at this stage-what you've typed above owes more to your own psychological need to believe something good will come rather than having any evidential basis for it. (That's why you get on people's tits is essentially what I'm saying btw).
Park Life 71
It's not about wether Best is good or not it's really about the fact we didn't make a real effort to sign a top tier striker, unless of course one was available at end of contract or ready to jump ship for a signing on fee. JawD 99
I applaud him for trying to take his chance, but that doesnt mean I should accept him. Never rated him at all. Course Im glad he's scored a few but to even mention him in the same breath as Shearer is laughable. Ok, they both play up front, thats where the similarities end. He's getting a run and taking his chances, great. Good on him. Still shite though. Ok, maybe shite is hard, but he is not a top 10 side main no one striker. Thats the problem. He's the best we have (pun intended). CT says he is currently scoring, my that I think he means he scored in the last game. Thats it. If he starts scoring 1 in 2 or 3 after starting for the next 10 games then I may reconsider but Ive seen nowt to convince me otherwise. Oh, and I didnt mention Ba as Ive not seen enough of him. I think he needs more game to get his fitness back up and sharpness. I can't really judge to be fair to him until then.

Shola is the only target man in our lineup, so i can see why he's getting games, but I'd say Best and Ba are our best forwards by a mile. Ba's favoured position is out wide left, which Pardew didn't let him play against Aresnal, but now that Ramadan is over i'm sure we'll see a much improved player.
