I know this doesn't help but here in the convict state when you buy something from abroad if the retailer ships it using the postal system GST (our VAT) and import tax don't apply unless the item is over $1000 but if it is shipped via a courier (fedex, UPS, TNT, etc) GST and import duty is applied to any package that is valued at $200 and over!

And the shipping company will pay the duty and then charge you, so you can't even argue the toss!

Ludicrous.

VAT will be charged on top of the purchase price if the goods are worth over £18. Customs duty will also be payable if the goods are worth over £135.

That'll be collected by HMRC at Coventry international hub, so unless you (or your exporter) has accounted for those amounts in advanced, your package wont be getting beyond the midlands until you've coughed up the outstanding revenues.

Import VAT is charged at the same rate as domestic VAT and the rate of customs duty depends on the commodity in question, so you'll have to do your own calculations and see whether that wipes out the £200 saving you reckon you're making. You can phone HMRC to help do this calculation for you, but it won't be binding if they fuck it up, which you should expect they will.

Yes, obviously many do, but when they get held back it can be a massive ball ache. Unless you're into dealing with public servants and phoning call centres in your spare time.

If you're not in a hurry to get the thing though then I spose that's not an issue.

If its off ebay or similar you can just ask the seller to mark it as a gift and out the value down as $20. Obviously you wont be able to insure it for its proper value though

True, but that's a criminal offence at the end of the day. You work as a public servant yourself don't you? Have you ever wondered where your wages come from, including your £20 per hour time-and-a-half overtime? Be funny if the government adopted a similar attitude to paying you your salary I reckon.

You'd need to pay VAT @ 20% and customs duty at whatever the appropriate rate is for a mobile phone mate. No idea what that might be but duty rates are often between 4-10%. You'll have to see where that leaves you compared to the UK price.

thats the trouble thease converter sites dont have a vat or income tax etc on them they just convert the money

Jesus D'man!

If the value of the phone is roughly £172, then add whatever your shipping and insurance costs you may have to that figure for it's overall 'value'. Then:

i. multiply by 20% (ie x that figure by 0.2) to give you the Import VAT amount

Then add those two figures together.

In the case of mobiles, apparently theres no customs duty to pay currently, so happy days. However if it's mega smart and classed as a GPS or something (depending on it's functionality) then duty may be applicable.

i found a site called bundlebox it apparently imports to the uk from usa using a usa address

That site is principally for if you're buying from a US seller who doesnt ship abroad themselves. ie bundlebox will receive it in the US and forward it to you in the UK (for an additonal fee), making the purchase possible when it previously was not. I think you can safely assume that amazon ship to the UK.

How the fuck does your mind work?

In fact, fuck this. If you're physically capable of putting one foot in front of the other for a relatively short sequence, then I strongly urge you to walk to the nearest phone shop.

Piss off man

If Brits didn't get ripped off with they wouldn't shop abroad. I tried to import a pinball machine (don't say it) because they don't sell the one I wanted in the UK, was going to cost me £1200+ in VAT and charges on top of the final price. Why the fuck should our government get nigh on a months wages out of me for absolutely nothing?

Why are iPads £350 in the US and £500 in the UK? I've got no guilt at all in avoiding extra charges

Well alright then, but apply that across the board and don't moan if your job disappears. Some of the stuff you post ("never being better off than during the recession etc") it sounds like you live in one of them public sector bubbles tbh where your wages just magically appear from nowhere. It's from commerce and tax. If taxes are higher (and they're still not higher than many countries) that's how we can just barely afford things like an NHS. Who's forcing you to buy pinball machines at the end of the day anyway?

VAT is a tax of the EC btw, it's not 'our government' whacking it on just for the fun of it, it is under a legal obligation to collect it. We're part of a customs union with Europe, so for that reason you're not paying customs charges on goods from the EC anymore (which we used to-so theres a saving there), but we do from the US and third countries. Fairly basic stuff.
