Dr Gloom 22187
For me, he's got to be played out wide on the right. Didn't look anywhere near as effective today playing more centrally as he did last season after hughton converted him into a right sided midfielder. Maybe doesn't have the pace or tricks expected from a winger but neither did beckham and he was always at his best on the flank. Barton's delivery from wide areas can be beckham-esque. Get him back on the wing. That's all assuming he stays, obviously.
Guest alex
Obertan looks like a waste of space so far so that's another reason to play Barton there. Edited August 20, 2011 by alex
Kevin S. Assilleekunt 1
Have you been on the drink Alex? Not that I disagree with you, you're not usually so harsh though.

Not a total donkey. At least he's got a bit of chevy chase about him... Not good enough to force Barton inside mind. Id like to see us revert to the 442 that served us well cast year, with Barton out wide. Just need target man now to replace Carroll. Oh yeah, that's shurla and ba innit
Aeris 0
Barton's delivery from wide areas can be beckham-esque. Get him back on the wing. I totally agree with the Beckham comparison, that's the first that came to mind after watching his crossing, passing, technique etc. over the last couple of seasons, he's exactly that type of player. He should defo be playing wide, and Obertan should consider retraining for something more like a fast striker role since he's still developing. Deano 0
Barton should be playing RM for us instead of Obertan. Obertan looks handy, quick and works hard but so far not shown he has a final ball in him.
sammynb 3517
Obertan looks like a 3m quid player and nothing more. A younger, balder version of the puff known as Lovenkrands.
toonotl 3116
He is quicker than Lovehandles but his touch isn't as good and that's not a compliment to Loven. Hopefully he settles I've only seen him play half a dozen times and he has looked useful now and again, admitting only looking useful while playing for ManU. I'm not going to right him off just yet though. Its too early.
Noelie 103
Barton's best position eh? ...........cell block 13.
Christmas Tree 4856
I think Pardews ideal team wouldn't include Barton. He would prefer to fast attacking wingers with Ben Arfa off a striker and Tiote and Cabaye in the middle. Will be a very interesting season to see how the team pans out, particularly with Gosling and Vuckic knocking on the door.

Sounds about right to me but at the moment, whilst the new lads settle, Barton is too important to drop.

Barton would need a spectacular drop in form for him not to make our strongest 11. Last season he was arguably our best player.
jonasjuice 0
Admittedly he hardly had a stormer but that ball for Ameobi's offside chance was pretty spot on, he's shown enough flashes to give him some time. We just have to remember not to expect him to be a world beater, think he'll be a useful enough squad player.
