Fabio Capello on Barton

England manager Fabio Capello believes Newcastle midfielder Joey Barton is too 'dangerous' to be considered at international level.

Despite his own insistence that he is one of the most effective midfielders in the Premier League, Barton's international career still only extends to a 12-minute substitute appearance against Spain at Old Trafford in 2007 - a cap earned during Steve McClaren's time in charge.

Even though Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard was ruled out by a thigh injury and Capello had to work on the basis Arsenal's Jack Wilshere was not available either, Barton's name was not amongst the squad unveiled for Wednesday's friendly with World Cup runners-up Holland at Wembley.

It is not as though Capello feels Barton is a bad player. In fact, the England coach sees a lot of positive attributes in the 28-year-old.

He simply feels the midfielder - transfer-listed earlier this week after his blast against the club's hierarchy on Twitter and with a string of problems, both on and off the pitch, on a sorry crime sheet - is too volatile to be trusted.

"If I find a really good player in the Championship I will pick him. Why not?"

Fabio Capello Quotes of the week

"He is a good player but he is a dangerous player because sometimes you could end up playing 10 v 11. He might get sent off," said Capello.

When it was put to the Italian that Barton's "head might go", the answer was firm, before a further explanation as to why he could not be considered this week.

Fighting

"Yes," said Capello. "But this is not a good moment to decide something about him.

"When a player is fighting with his club it is normal to stay outside. The relationship between a club and a player is really important."

The folly of Barton's refusal to adopt a more mature stance to his entire career could be viewed in Scott Parker's presence within the England fold, even though, as it presently stands, he is looking ahead to a season in the Championship with West Ham.

After spending so long on the outside of England gatherings, it seemed odd Capello should assure Parker he would not be dumped, even if he fails to secure a move away from Upton Park before the transfer window closes.

However, Capello does feel it would be better for the 30-year-old if he remained a top-flight player.

"If I find a really good player in the Championship I will pick him. Why not?" said Capello. "Parker is one of the players who can play with the national team.

"He is part of the group. If he is fit, he will be okay and stay with us but I hope for him and for me he will play in the Premier League."

Solution

There was also some good news for Frank Lampard, who it had been suggested was on borrowed time with England.

Lampard was sacrificed at half-time on England's last outing as a desperate Capello tried to claw back a half-time deficit against Switzerland.

That the man who replaced him, Ashley Young, should get the goal which earned England a point merely added to the belief Lampard is yesterday's man and has no place in a side which Wilshere is becoming such a central component.

However, Capello has moved to reassure the 33-year-old he has no plans to discard him.

"No. Absolutely not," he said. "Lampard is an important player. He is really good.

"I substituted him against Switzerland because we were losing and a manager needs to find a solution.

"We had to try something different."

its this line about him getting sent of that I really think is bullshit, Bartons been sent off once in the last 4 years and 4 times in his carreer. which funnily enough is the same number of times as Scott Parker who he is considering picking despite being in the CCC. and the same as Steven Gerrard and oddly enough frank lampard who is also still in contention despite being 33 and almost never performing for England

I usually defend capello when people (chiles) comes out with this garbage about him not being able to speak english (which he only does if someone asks him a question he doesnt want to answer) but his tenure as england manager has been a disaster, Im not one of these who believes we should be winning the world cup every time it rolls round but he came in as one of the most respected disciplinarian managers to have been involved in the game yet he still picks players who dont deserve to be in the england team and who dont perform for their country.

Just shows how much he isn't watching the league, recent performance or anything else when making his decisions for picking the England squad. Outdated out of ideas.

He was a twat, now he's calmed down and he still wont touch him. Disgraceful. Sorry to go all rugby on you, but Matt Stevens done shit loads of coke, done his 2 year ban and is now back playing for England.

David Pleat has criticised Joey Barton’s conduct – and claimed he doesn’t have the quality to play for a top five Premier League club.

Barton has been told he can leave Newcastle for nothing this summer, despite having a year still to run on his contract, after upsetting the club’s hierarchy with critical comments on Twitter.

Speaking to Keys & Gray, Pleat said the midfielder should show Newcastle chiefs more respect and believes he will struggle to find another Premier League team willing to take him on.

“We’re talking about the player as though as he’s Maradona,” he said. “As far as I'm concerned, he’s a decent club player who would like a longer contract, he probably wants more money than he's getting.

“He ain't going to get much more money than he's getting, let me tell you that. The top five clubs in this country will not be prepared to take him, because of quality, and the rest of the clubs in the Premiership will think twice about the longer contract and about giving him any more money than he's getting.

"He's on a fair deal at Newcastle, he's been a good player at Newcastle and he should continue to play and respect the club. He's under contract at the moment, he signed a contract which runs until the end of this coming season so why doesn’t he wait until the end of the season until he's a free transfer."

Joseph Barton

Just heard David Pleat's comments from last wk, should he be having a pop at anyone? Really??? #3mph

Oliver Holt

@Joey7Barton if you want to judge people on past misdemeanours, should you be having a pop at anyone? Really?

Joseph Barton

@OllieHoltMirror am not judging. U'll find am responding to his judgement!!! U still judge me don't u? maybe I should judge u? #glasshouses

Joseph Barton

@OllieHoltMirror if Pleat wants to raise his head above the parapet, then he's fair game. Same as I am for u and vice-versa #helmet

He seems to get on well with Henry Winter (who I personally think is one of the best around). This is despite Winter writing a strong article about him last season with Barry Glendenning had a go at him about.

Des Kelly is indeed a helmet. I've no idea about Ollie Holts merits.
