Feltch The Manfat 0
link: http://www.newcastle-online.org/nufchistor...ber9stats.shtml Mention the number 9 of Newcastle United and Alan Shearer - the current inhabitant of the shirt - will come to mind. And with good reason too. Shearer is a true Toon legend who many would argue as being numerous uno. However there is perhaps an even bigger legend at Newcastle than the great man himself. A legend that has always been with the club and always will, in part thanks to the efforts of Big Al among others. A legend that makes legends such as Shearer. Who is this legend? The number 9 shirt of course! Is there any other club in England or indeed the world who can boast of having such a distinctive shirt? Arguably there is no other club who can boast of having had so many great players playing in just the one shirt. Or a club who embrace a number such as we do with the number 9 from fans to players alike? In world football the great duo of Pele and Maradona have made the number 10 shirt a distinctive one while at Manchester United George Best and David Beckham of late have both made the number 7 shirt a distinctive one for them. All revered numbers in world football, but none match the number 9 shirt of Newcastle United. For some of the world's best goalscorers have graced it and will continue to grace it. Mention the number 9 of Newcastle United and it reads: Skill, pace, flair, power, strength, bravery, technique, goals, goals, goals and more goals. And that is why it's a special shirt with a tradition as long and proud as the club itself. Historically and consistently we have been honoured to have had strikers with those great qualities wearing the number 9 shirt of NUFC and here we pay homage to the shirt of legends and the goalscorers who have worn it with distinction throughout the years. I particularly like the bit where it says Pele and Maradona's number 10 shirt, and Beckham and Best's number 7 shirt does not match your number 9 shirt If this isn't deluded, I don't know what is! ewerk 31228
Seriously, you're reading an NUFC article from at least five years ago? If this isn't obsessed, I don't know what it is.

Lazarus 0
Why no mention of baresi's or maldini's no 3 shirts which were both revered then retired in that article?
Tom 14013
If anyone walks around Milan in a A.C shirt with number 3 or 6 on and the shirt has anything but Maldini or Baresi on there's bother! For the record if Maldini's sons make it to the Milan's first team they will bring the #3 out of retirement.

The Fish 10972
Genuine question for the mackems; is there a shirt that you hold dear at sunderland? As was mentioned, Man U's No7, Brazil's 10, Argentina's 10. It's noteworthy that some clubs/teams have these "special" shirts and others don't
